It's not really an album at all, but close enough; Sade's soundclick.

Meh, I wouldn't call Silver Rain a solo bass album, since the bass isn't always the main part.

I was thinking the same. Still a great album, nonetheless.

I don't have that many, but my favorite is easily Sheehan's Cosmic Troubadour.

Defo a contender for my favourite but just comes second.

All the CD stores around here suck so I only have Jaco's solo (and that was hard enough to find) so I'm going to say that one.

Soliloquy.
Manring is one of the only solo bassists I can actually stomach listening to for extended periods of time.

Oops, forgot to mention Manring's "Toward the Center of Night" album.
What solo stuff he does do on it, (Blue Orleans, for example) is simply fantastic.
Radio Free Albemuth for bass focused, A Show of Hands for solo bass.

Kings Of Sleep by Stuart Hamm and Elegant Punk by Jonas Hellborg are two absolute favourites, I love them to bits. Both awesome.

Tough call.
Manring's Drastic Measures has to be up there, with John Lester's Live at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House.
Very different styles - John Lester's stuff isn't usually that technically complex. He's not so much a solo bassist as a solo singer/songwriter, who just happens to use a bass or an upright as his accompaniment. Definitely recommend checking his stuff out, if you get the chance.

John Lester is so amazing. I've only heard The Ways Of A Woman, but it's so good.

Live at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House is only actually on sale from gigs, I think. Got mine signed. :p
He took us all completely by surprise - we were expecting virtuosic instrumental hey-look-what-I-can-do playing... and then he pulls up a 19th century upright, and starts off with this chilled but upbeat vocal/bass number... (Rose Coloured Glasses)

The Essential by Mark King isn't a "bass solo"album but it does feature his fantastic playing, a song with a 3 minute bass solo and some of the best tunes he's ever played on.

Im not that into much solo bass stuff. But i like Billy Sheehans new album, even though its not really solo bass.

Passion, Grace and Fire by John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia and Al Di Meolais amazing, but a bit bass-light to be featured here...

I dunno, Word of Mouth is kind of boring. The entire album feels like it should be the background for a cinematic montage or something. A lot of the songs don't have much melody, just a kind of ambience. The playing is sweet, but it is hard for me to listen to any of the songs straight through.
His self-titled is sweet though.

If it counts, Charles Mingus's Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Pure freaking genius, but its not for the casual listener.

I know the feeling. My affinity for it is more out of musical respect, admiration and ponderance rather than any emotional connection. Still great to listen to.

Anyway, he might not be as complex as jaco but I've always felt Stanley Clarke could write a better tune...

Word of Mouth Revisited is a really great album...hearing all those great players covering Jaco tunes, all the different tones on tht album, it's marvellous.

Not really a solo album but The Light Beyond i think is Stu's best work. I find all his other albums like Kings of Sleep boring.

Well, he does have some pretty cool lines on it. His solo tracks on the GHS albums aren't my favourites but they are still cool.

Jaco's Debut Album right at the top of my list. What does everyone think of School Days as a bass focused album?
