If I'm about 5'6, and are planning on growing some more...would a 3/4 size bass be too small?

Size with DB really doesnt matter some pros use 3/4th. I am around 5"4 and I play a 3/4 at school and a full at home. I like the full alot better. Do you mean to small in the way that you would be too tall for it? or too small meaning not spaceing? any DB questions you can just aim. i know a bit alot orchestral and jazz playing.

I'm just wondering which would be more comfortable for me starting out.

I'd say start on a 3/4 and stick with it. As opposed to tenor up there i actually prefer a 3/4

String Bass is 100% up to your taste. I have played 900$ bows that pro's love and I hate. I have played 1,200$ bows that I love and my pro bass teacher hates. Even what bow, rosin and strings you use will 100% change your tone.

I need a starter that's not ridiculously expensive.

String Bass's get up to 60,000$ when your a pro looking for something amazing beond words. I started on a 2,000$ POS! I hated it. It even turned me off String Bass because it sounded sooo bad. See what kind of payment plans you can get if your really dead set on a String Bass.

3/4 is the most popular size. If you really want a helpful answer, go over to talkbass.com and search it. It's discussed somewhat frequently.

3/4 is the industry standard. If you're going into jazz, get one, because most professional jazz players use it. 4/4 generally is too unweildy.

I use a 3/4. I'm roughly 5'8
4/4 is like for basketball players.

uhh, I don't know who would buy a bass that cost that much... my teacher's upright is over 100 years old, he told me when he sells it, it'll go for $5,000

Your teacher is most likely not telling, My teachers bass is 120 years old and cost him 30,000 and its beat up really badly.
