I am playing in a drum-off at Sam Ash in a week. I need some opinions from all ya'll niggaz:
Should I try to sit there and try to groove for five minutes? or should I play some songs that I know by bands that have serious drum parts in them, like, the obvious, dream theater, or other stuff with a lot of double bass in order to be flashy?
Any thoughts...?

groove my friend. Nobody cares what drum parts you know... that's irrelevant. Just groove it up.

Hehe.. Don't play a song without the music ;), that would just be foolish...
I would groove for 5 minutues, but if Sam Ash is like Guitar Center, the only way you could win is by pullnig off a chop fest..:(

I made it to the regionals. I did a chopfest, with minimalistic groove (My solo style) And a older guy who did some really basic grooves that felt good Moved on.
Im not saying anything against the guy. But they want people who do grooves, and have decent hands.

What if I played an unoriginal groove, like from a song?

Dude do what you want, don't do it to win though. You could, But... Eh... Have fun, and if all the kids are immature voting ( or judges ) Than so what... Oh yeah judges hehe..
They'll probably know a thing or two about music... so groove is cool;).

If I played Honor thy father by dream theater, just the first minute, or maybe even the first minute of Dream Theater's 6 o'clock, it might just spell instantaneous victory.

Its easy. I won the week competition and the monthly competition. But just bring a **** load of your friends to cheer for you because the judges choose winner by applause.
But just groove a lot and do some cross overs and ****.

haha
I thought the whole thing about the sam ash competitions were stupid. When I did it, they told me to bring friends to cheer because judges (sam ash employees) judge by applause. So my thought was to do things with skill but also add looks to them. Thats why its easy to win.

i have never been in a drum off but i do preformin my schools drumline(currently third in the nation) and it has taken me a while to learn that you just gotta play for yourself and not the judges. I like to tell my section every time before we go on to just do hat feels right, groove, and f**k it hard. Hope i helped.

It's all in the what the judges feel like seeing. You could go up and shred like vince and you might lose.
Just play your best and assume your not going to win. It's just for fun anyway.

If it's anything like Guitar Center you'll need to be of an ethnic minority to win.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FTW!!!
It's a shame that it has to be that way, but that's what happens when people strive too hard to be politically correct...
