I'm almost 100% sure that im not the only drummer who body tones/power lifts.
would adding muscle weight hinder or slow playing at all? or would it increase speed?
I've been using ankle weights for double bass playing and when i take em off it seems to be working, but i wa sjust wondering if it could also damage my ankles or whatever?
DISCUSS.

Too much muscle hinders fluidity. Too little hinders stamina and power.

I disagree.
I think a lot of muscle might hinder fluidity, if you let it. Like body builder huge might definitely, since some of them can't even brush their own teeth because of their biceps.
But being small wouldn't hinder stamina and power. I weigh about 125 lbs, and I am perfect capable of playing loud and for long periods of time.
I don't think it has anything to do with muscle or even being fit. It's all about technique.
I know some fat guys, who smoke with their ashtray on their floor-tom, who can play for hours in these New Orleans jazz clubs and they don't even break a sweat. It's mentality... not physique.

I think its more of a mix between both physique and mentality, its not either or.

you think... maybe so. But I've never seen someone who couldn't drum just because they were too small or too big.

I totally agree...but look at this scenario. You said you are 125 lbs. and play fine. Would you rather play at 100 lbs. or 150 lbs.? I would rather be bigger before being smaller, which is why i wouldnt advise against working out.

I guess that does make sense. I don't know the definitive answer.... good point though.

I think if you want to work out then work out but if you are doing it because you think it will make you better at drums, you are doing it for the wrong reason.
You need quick racehorse type muscles for drums. They need to be fast, whether they are big or small.
Anyways if you have good technique you wouldn't need to worry about bodybuilding slowing you down because you should be using mostly wrists anyways.

I would think it's more about cutness. Don't gotta be big. And to the tard about asians, I hope you find your death by starvation through being deported to antarctica.

the whole "muscle" theory never made sense to me. since proper technique doesn't involve you lifting your entire arm each stroke, i don't see how the muscles in your arm have anything to do with your fingers and wrists.

DO NOT USE ANKLE WEIGHTS! they can lead to serious problems in your feet and ankles. But im not very big, but i do 50 sit ups and 25 pushups daily so i can keep some muscle. so i can have a good amount of stamina.

Body buildings not going to help your drumming... Wanna know what will?
Sit down behind the kit for an hour a day at least... Simply PLAY the drums thats all thats needed. You don't need ankle weights, you don't need to do calve presses, you don't need to job 5miles a day. JUST PLAY thats the only way to get better.

thank you for posting DBJ. your input is appreciated, as well as everyone elses.
well, i wasnt putting much emphasis on getting better via weightlifting, but iw as wondering if there was any negative effects.
i mean, i'm getting up there in size and the last thing i wanna ruin is my playing ability. if thats the case, im gonna choose my drums over a bigger bod :P

Well you shouldn't have anything to worry about as long as you keep your wrists and fingers in shape.

There are no negative effects of weight lifting regarding your drumming. If anyone doubts this, check out Virgil Donati. He's ripped, in great shape, and it hasn't slowed him down or stopp him from being able to play smoothly. Building leg and forearm muscles are going to help your playing, but not so much that it will turn you into the next big name.

Thomas Lang being another example, that guy is trained.
Anyway it's always good to be in good physical shape and it doesn't hurt your drumming ability.

Wait a moment everyone. Lets find out somethign first...
How big are you now?
Cause "big" to me is 6' and over 210 with 10% bf or less. I know guys far bigger then that who shred kits...
I wouldn't worry about it.

I used to be fat with no muscle and my back always hurt when i sat down to play. I started working out a year and a half ago with deadlifts and squats and I find it easier to sit on the kit for hours at a time with no pain. Being healthy doesnt make you become a better player but it does make it easier and pain free.

I so some exercising because I play football and lacrosse but i never do anything that will be a risk to my drumming. Some running, and a moderate workout will be fine.

^^^I dont know about that.
Lifting and drumming is always a plus, and since they both are physical activites you benifit from a healthy and fit body. Sure you can be fat and play, but I personally find it harder. Its harder to anything when your fat, trust me I know.

put it this way, body building, power lifting, anything that is meant to put on SIZE, will not help you. A muscle trained to lift lots of weight 3-10 times, won't like it when you do endurance related activities, because obviously body building is not meant for endurance. Not only this, but the best way to train in theory is to play, to get better at drums play drums, to get better at weightlifting and to look good(or whatever ur reason) lift weights, to get better at driving a car, drive a car, to get better at using a computer, use a computer.... I belive my point has been taken.
