Depends really what you're looking for. If you want to get rid of 'mellow' I'd get some DiMarzio Model J's to make your bass snaral. But I have no experience with EMG J's. I'm sure they'd be different though, just usually in the realm of 'hi-fi' and modern.

I have some EMGs in a fretless jazz of mine that I am unfortunately trying to sell, anyway. I think tonally they will be a mild improvement? They are still a bit mellow and easy going, but they have a nice spread. The stock pups I was replacing were lame ducks on the treble side, but these give pretty consistent even coverage through the tonal spectrum.

Anyway if the bass fails to sell again on ebay I would be more than willing to take the pups out of the bass and sell them to you. They are like 2 months old.

i think emg js are great pickups but they are still a bit mellow. i guess it depends on how durastic of a change you want outta ur pic ups. if you still want a fairly decent "mellow" sound to them then these would be great. but yet these pickups are quite versatile.

I've heard Dimarzio model J's are some of the best Jazz bass pickups, and they are probably less mellow than Emgs.

What year is it? I've been told they stopped using the same size pup in 98?
Anyway, another way to tell is to bust out a ruler. If you still have questions just call Bartolini.

I know you probably aren't interested, but Aero instruments will make you a set of any of their pickups to fit in the Mexican size.
