Yo, whenever I hit my tom-toms without pads on they make this stupid echoey sound which is completely useless. How come in songs and stuff they sound so much better. Do I just need to tighten them an immense amount? They sound so much better with pads on.

With pads you get no sound at all...

That "echoey" sound is what we call resonance. When you play with a band, you need resonance to cut through the other instruments for the audience to hear it. The ringing carries the sound.

If there was no resonance, an audience sitting far away from the drums wouldn't be able to hear them. What you hear and what the audience hears is different. The audience will hear a more "proper" sound.

That is a very useful tool when learning how to tune. If you don't tune your drums the right way, they won't sound good.

for an example, hitting a tom-tom by itself in a wide open space with no other sound going on might sound different then hitting a tom-tom during a live show in the middle of a band in a closed room

edit: standing behind or in front of the kit matters too!

Regardless of the setting, you should get used to playing an unmuffled drum.

it's not useless, even if you prefer no ring to your drums (which has already been adressed above) having the oppurtunity to use that gives your set more versatility. I have o rings on my set, not becuase i enjoy the sound better (it depends on which drum) but becuase now i can have little ring, or take 5 sec and take them off and have the ring.

Seriously, if you isolated the drum track from a recording of your favorite band, you'll notice the toms do ring.

O shi! I know the answer!

Dude what you gotta do to get rid of the ring is ask a forum!

Seriously man. Make sure you don't use common sense. Than ask a forum a crappy question, and wait for the great responses to roll in.

People confuse ring with resonance. Ring is that high overtone coming off the tom. Personally, I don't want that. I want a nice, even, resonant note, but not with all these over/undertones.
Just read through the tuning bible. its all about getting your lugs at consistent pitches
