It can warp the shell. I advise an Evans Retroscreen

I played without a reso for a while yesterday but all the stuff inside starting coming out so I put it back on.
I have balls of newspaper in my bassdrum but it wasnt deep enough. I just thought id say :thumb:

it'll sound like a one-headed drum?
if you have lugs for a bottom head, your lug inserts will rattle like mad.
You might put on a mesh head (like Phil suggested, 'cept you can get tons cheaper) just to protect your edges and shut your resos up.

If you like the sound just cut a 7 inch hole in the reso as it will sound like it has no reso and not warp.

I think Evan's retroscreen is equivelent to diplomat... which is like Real thin, Sorta like not having a reso.....Aquarian has one too, check their site...

good to know some people play musical instruments for the sounds they make. what a f'ckin tosser.
sonically, there is alot less attack without the reso, you have a boomy note that fades out quickly. there's less volume [as less resonating in the note] and the feel is very different. its abit of a workout to change to for your legs.

No it's fine, I used to play without a resonant head for a while and nothing happened to the drum.

the drumsets at my drum lessons are like that, but then again, those sets are crappy sets.

If you want the "no reso head" look and sound just get a clear g1 and port an 7-8 inch hole in the center.
It can warp the shell. I advise an Evans Retroscreen
I think thats only when you have rack toms mounted on the bass drum. If you have a virgin bass drum you should be ok. You just gotta worry about the bearing edges getting screwed up.

There's some guides posted on MX on ports advising the surface area of a 7" port or higher in a 22" head essentially lets out enough air pressure nearly equivilent having no resonant head. would someone like to search one of these guides up?

That's actually from the Drum Tuning Bible.....talking about ports.....
Here are the basic concepts:
Any hole larger than 7” is like having no head at all on the drum.
A 7” hole creates the feel of a one-headed kick drum, feeds more beater attack direct to an audience and provides some of the tone of the resonant head. Further, it’s easy to position a mic and change internal muffling devices, if used.

I wouldn't argue, it's the tuning bible. Our school drumset doesen't have a reso and it sounds amazing. I would like to trade my percussion teacher.

I like it for miking. It means you can stick a a mic 3" into the bass drum, instead of 1 inside, and one outside the head [aka with a reso]. which = cheaper.
