Hey everyone, im new to the forum (second post) and i've been playing just over a year know. My taste in music ranges from RHCP all the way to System of a Down, but none of that crazy screaming Death Metal. I mostly like funk and i was wondering what bass would be good for that type of music. Right know I have an OLP Music Man ( it's a great guitar) but im thinking it's about time to get a new one. My price range is 600 and under, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Ty : )

I'm inclined to say Lakland, if you can find a used one. They certainly have nice funk tones.

Yep, go with that Fender J. I don't like fender j's too much, but they'd be perfect for what you're asking for. :thumb:

P-Bass is for everything dude, and the P special is even more versatile, having the normal P Bass pickup plus a Jazz bass pickup.

the whole pbass = punk is very outdated. the truth is, you make make JUST ABOUT any bass work with any type of music

Is this what you guys are talking about http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN135762. I'll give it a try at my music store but the only thing im saying is i've never really seen any bands i like play them like Flea uses some sort of Ernie Ball Music Man (or something) Victor Wooten uses a Fodera Monarch Deluxe and jaco used a fender jazz so i don't know i'll give it a try.

I've heard a lot of the early funk players used P-Basses, I'm not certain cos it's not really a genre I know a lot about, but I think a P or a J would suit you fine. I'm getting a Highway 1 PBass very shortly.

Flea actually uses a modulus now, but i doubt that would be in your price range

this is $600 US we're talking about?
if you already have an OLP, and you're really lucky, you may be able to sell that, and get a used MM stingray.
also, Cort G series basses have a great slap tone, and are pretty damn good for the price

yeah p bass's are versatile, but i still think they suck. but ive been playing one for far too long ( a year) and have been mocked with all these great basses i get to play with the music shop manager at his house.

hey, pbasses are the building blocks of all bassness. And they can absolutely be top notch for sound if you eq them right

Fender Jazz is a good choice, I'd go for it.

I've still got my old OLP Stingray, it's an old one I think and it sounds and plays great, especially now it's fretless.

Dude, I have the perfect bass for your needs:

Yamaha BB614

I almost bought on for the tones you can get out of it and high quality construction. It's extremely versatile, especially with the pickup combination. However, I got my Warwick instead, but I so almost got this.

Seriously recommended

Wow im really thinking about getting a schecter, but i need to ask something. What's the difference between a Schecter Stiletto Elite(http://www.zzounds.com/item--SCESTE5) and a Schecter Stiletto Studio(http://www.zzounds.com/item--SCESTS5). Also What the hecks a neck thru, sorry i really don't know a lot of technical stuff

Radiobass81

Neck-through means the body and neck are one-piece, as opposed to the neck being bolted on.

Horrible explanation, I know.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Studio has 3-band EQ, and the Elite only has two.

Well, Fungus. I hope it's not to late but the Fender Highway 1 you are
considering is a good choice. I've been a bass player for over 23 years and
have quite a few basses. One of my favorites is a Fender American Standard(made in Mexico)
that Bass Player magazine reviewed. They loved it so I tried the fretless
they recommended. it has nylon coated strings and if you were to turn around,
you would swear it was an upright bass. I love the thing and it cost me
about $369! I have basses that cost 10 times as much and then some.
But that bass is awesome. They do have them with frets. And they look
exactly like the Highway you looked at. The Yamaha BB614 that dude
mentioned above is also a good choice. Good tone, good quality for little coin.

Well what are the advantages of a neck thru????

Radiobass81
03-27-2006, 02:12 PM
More sustain, supposedly. The tone is a bit different, but really, I doubt the change should be THAT much, unless of course, the neck that would have been bolted-on would have had other tones woods or something.
