View Full Version : Very high CPU usage - help fast!

Ok, so I upgraded my graphics card from a Radeon 9200 to a GeForce 6600GT.
When I turned on the computer things got incredibly slow. I opened the task manager and it looks like the CPU is getting hammered. Doing the smallest things like opening a folder takes 100% CPU usage and slows things down a lot. Trying to do anything more, like watching a video, really kills it. Videos hardly move.
Internet Explorer takes ages to start but works alright once it's open. I already removed all the ATI software from my computer and installed the latest nVidia driver. Didn't really change much.
I don't think any of my hardware is damaged. Hopefully it's just a software problem. Anyone got a solution? Know of a better forum for this kind of advice?
What kind of processor do you have? How much RAM do you have? Can you give me some specs?

2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM.
Everything worked fine before I switched the graphics card.

I have the same specs as you. 6600GT, as well. May seem obvious, but I have to ask. Did you clean the registry out and check your program files for any shreds of the old driver that may remain. Also, I believe their are some free driver cleaners around. You may find a link in the "Downloads" sticky or at guru3d.com.
I've heard of things going nuts when switching card makers, and perhaps something needs to be changed in Bios. Which I know nothing about. Hang in there and google some stuff while you wait for help here. Something is bound to work.

Many thanks. Please explain how to clean the registry.
There are a number of registry cleaners on the market. And doing it manually can be tricky. So I recommend these two free programs:
CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/
It features a decent registry cleaner, but can be a little confusing and vague. It's very general, and depending how many useless entries come up you may have to wade through a lot. But it generally only gets rid of what you don't need. Just make sure to create a back up (it will do this for you) before deleting anything, as if you delete something you need you can restore it. But it's pretty reliable.
I would recommened using this first:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/
Scroll down to Hijack This! Known primarily as a tough spyware cleaner, it also is a registry cleaner. And unlike CCleaner which shows you dead entries, this shows you still active ones, also. Run it, save a log file, copy and paste the log file here:
http://www.hijackthis.de/
Click analyze. Don't close Hijack This, and when the analyzer is done (it takes seconds) look for old driver references, check them against what the program found, and eliminate from the program accordingly.
This may help, but I have a feeling it might be something more. Worth a shot, though. And these are good programs to have, anyway. Good luck.

Everything is good so far as the driver is concerned with the HiJack This scan. Doesn't look like you have any active entries from the old driver, and your machine looks clean in general, so that's good. You have a few issues, though.
Run CCleaner and remove any dead entries from the old driver. And again, my knowledge is limited, but someone will be along soon with more help, I'm sure.

Press ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager, then take screenshots of the Processes and Performance tabs. Hopefully I can help you from looking at how your processor is performing. It's basically anything that I've got running uses up more CPU power than it should.
explorer.exe, iexplorer.exe, etc. When I run them they shoot up to 100 or close.
Even the task manager itself goes up to about 60.

looks like your processor is underperforming quite a bit. did you dislodge the heatsink or anything when you were installing the new graphics card?

Perhaps. Before installing the graphics card someone went in there with a vacuum to pick up dust and tidied up the cables for me. I think he was careful though.
