This is an incredibly dumb question, but lets say I wanted black cymbals.. Could I paint them and have then still sound the same? And if I could, what paint would I use..

Might try asking paiste. They color there cymbals. Although I don't know if they would tell you what to use.
Personally, sounds dumb to me.

Yeah, I was thinking about Joey Jordisons cymbals when I made this.
But it'd be cool to have some black cymbals on my black set, then all I'll need is black hardware and I can have a gothic set for a not so gothic band.

 ok, Well I have played on a black "color sound" crash. So it is definetly possible.

The paint'll mute your cymbals, as well as chip off within a few weeks of play; leaving you with a mess. The custom finishes that paiste does are done at a very technical level, not at the end by just sweeping a brush over them.

Alright, uuhhhh, might as well ask another question rather then posting a new thread, how can I get rid of this ring on my snare drum? It's not the head, it's from the rims, is there a way to muffle it with duct tape, and if so, how?

I heard it was a thin layer of powder coating. Something which is very expensive, it wont mute the sound or chip off I dont think.
Stagg Black Metal cymbals are black but I heard that they are weird sounding.
Get moongel, DO NOT put tape on the heads. It looks so unprofessional.

No I was going to tape it on the underside of the head, not the top of the head. That way it is unseen and should still work, but like I said, the sound is comming from the rims.

Your snare drum is supposed to ring. That's it projecting and resonating. That's the sound that helps it cut through the rest of the kit and be heard. From an audience perspective, you can barely hear it. Try using some moongels or o-rings though. That will dampen it.

I have a pair of panty hose on one of my snares for recording. Works good.

Oh alright, well the ring just sounds ****ty but alright.
Plan B.
03-25-2006, 05:02 PM
I wish I could paint cool designs on my cymbals without having the paint chip off.
What would you paint?
I would paint like some band logo.
Plan B.

I think it'd be funny to paint a sunflower on your ride, and the bell would be like the middle of the flower, and have seeds and stuff, and the pedals would branch out onto the surface. How badass would that be?
Or like intricate vines all over a China.

Step to the other side of the kit and listen. It makes a big difference. There's no problem with doing it while you're just playing at home or recording or whatever, but if you ever do gigs, make sure it's ringing or else it will be really hard for the audience to hear it. I used to put tape on my snare drum and when I would play a gig with my band, you could hardly hear the snare at all.

hmm, i would paint one boob on my crash, and then the other boob on my ride.
awesome.

Paiste uses a special paint(well, its more of a powercoating, but not really) on their cymbals. I would not advise using any paint on cymbals yourself. And Paiste charges 30% more on their cymbals to have them coated, so that ends up being about $350-400 each(for 2oo2 and sig.)

Why did paiste retire their color sound line?

Paiste Visions/Rainbow/Colorsound series. They were discontinued due to lack of demand.

HAHA this suddenly reminded me of the Spongebob episode where they need something new to attract customers to the Krusty Krab and he comes up with "pretty patties" which are multicolored hamburgers.

In response to the threadmak0r!
When u said Jordison's black cymbals, do u mean his RUDEs? They're manifactured to look old and really earthy instead of gleaming with bronze finish. They're not quite black but pretty dark.

Joey did use, I dunno whether he still does, white Paistes which you could actually buy. Theyre discontinued now but I remember asking about them as I saw them on GAK

I sprayed a beginner cymbal with black spray paint once. I didn't look great so I wiped it off with Citro Clean.

all cymbals have a clear, protective finish on them. (similar to the clear finish on laquered/stained drums). Otherwise, your cymbal would oxidize to the color of the Statue of Liberty before you even got your hands on it.
the Paiste coloreds are, in fact, powdercoated, underneath that clear layer.
if you want to do it yourself, you have to:
1) sand/blast off that layer of clear
2) powdercoat the beast
3) re-clear
and if you actually are dumb enough to try it, i wish you best of luck getting past step 1 and still having a cymbal that sounds the same!

I don't understand why someone would want black symbols anyways...
Epiphender
03-27-2006, 12:02 AM
...and I don't understand why so many people on here can't spell cymbal, even when it's spelled correctly all over the site, and, in this case, throughout the rest of the thread.

I use a shammy to shine my shimbals?
Epiphender
03-27-2006, 12:19 AM
You know you're supposed to use a shammy to polish up the coats of various types of Greyhounds? I read it in a real dog encyclopedia.
Not as bad as the hair maintenance for the curly coat retriever. It says you're supposed to take a PENCIL and CURL THEIR HAIR around it while it's drying. Isn't the point of all this ridiculous breeding so that we don't have to do things like this?? When I buy a dog with "curly coat" in the name, I expect a coat that I won't need to curl to get curls!! Sheesh.
