I was wondering if anyone could help put an arguement between my friend and I to rest. Is the sixth string on the bass a high or a low? Also, what is the new string tuned to. One of us say it's a high C, and the other says low F#.

I think they are tuned:
(low) B
E
A
D
G
(high)C
as standard. Im sure you can get ones with low F# but theyre mostly as above i believe

That and the fact they play different instruments.

I might be mistaken but Bass is one octave lower and they are tuned the same... accept the top 1 or 2 depending. and isnt it tuned in 5ths? hence the circle of 5ths?

bass is 1 octave lower than guitar, and is tuned in 4ths from low to high. the only stringed instrument to be tuned in such a manner

It's the circle of 4ths and 5ths depending on which way you go around, clockwise or anticlockwise.

Unless you count the double bass to be a different instrument.

4ths and 5ths refer to the notes which follow the root notes up the scale
eg. the 4th of an open E is an A:
EFGA
1234
a 5th is just one after the 4th, thats best i can explain right now, im very tired

Apart from double bass.
seeing as how i said bass, and upright, contra, double bass was the origional bass then i've included it.

You're right. Guitar sucks. In fact, let's all just go back to playing acoustic uprights/contra/double basses so that we don't even look like guitarists.
A wider range of notes would be the obvious answer. Plus, more strings = more notes per position. Imagine being able to play entire songs that span over 4 octaves in just one hand position. That's why.

Play your E-string at the 12th fret. Play the open Low E-string on a guitar.
Then get back to me.

*counterclockwise.
It's still called the Circle of Fifths, you just have to know that a fifth in one direction is a fourth in the other.

I'll try and explain the fifth/fourth thing.
Take a C note, fifth up is a G. Take a G note, fourth up is a C. If you played a C (3rd fret on the A string) then moved down to G (3rd fret on the E string) you've got whats called an inverted fifth...which just so happens to be the same as a fourth. But if you have the C on the A string and move UP to a G on the D string youve got a fifth.
I think someones already said it depends on which direction you're moving in, in terms of pitch. Moving down to the G from a C makes it a fourth (or inverted fifth) and moving up to the G from the C makes it a fifth.
Hope that helps
