I got my bass a few years ago played it a lot then stopped playing(probably typical)
I a few weeks ago I started playing again and have been having fun. I think the strings need replaced some of them have like brown spots on them and stuff. Today I was playing and I stood up to sit in a different chair and went to play and it wont play through the amp. My amp is working ok but its not working now.
I was going to take it in to get it fixed up anyways next week when I go home. ANyone know what could be wrong and how much am I looking at to get it like tuned up(or w/e I should have done after it was sitting for over a year) also would nayone have any idea what could be wrong and how much that would cost to fix?
Thanks a bunch for any help.

For the tuneup, it shouldn't be much. Just buy new strings, take the old strings off, clean the bass (take a dry towel and QTips and just remove any dust), and restring it. Tune up done! :p
It sounds like a wire problem in your bass' input jack...if you move the jack around while sitting does it click and go in and out (soundwise, not physically) a lot? Is the jack loose? Does the sound fade and sound really distorted and unclear? You could need to tighten the jack and/or solder a wire or two.

123,
Maybe lemon oil the fingerboard as you clean the bass.
As for your problem it sounds like an input jack problem or a faulty lead. Neither cost a lot to fix.

I get no sound from the amp with the bass plugged into it.
So I dont need to take it into a shop to get anything adjusted? How hard is putting on strings? What kind is recomended?
Thanks for the fast replys!

^ You can bring it in and see what they say. It might be a problem one needs to see to get fixed.
Putting on strings is easy. There's excellent turorials floating around on here and the internet in general that'll help you.
Any kind...it all depends on the tone/feel you want. I usually use Rotosounds but that's just me. Look online and do some research about what strings give what tone(s) and see what fits you best.

Would you reccomend I take that bass to a place like guitar center or a lil shop?
What would the price range be if its something you think it could be?
Also when I take it in what are some basses you could recomend that I fool around on? I play some old starter Samick bass. Anyone recomend some nice basses so I can see what I am missing?

Your lucky, the volume on my bass doesnt work. It goes- quiet>>to loud and thats it.

Nope, the volume knob did come lose tho, so it spins extra and just the wires hold it in place :) But it had been like this forever and the volume is turned up, I am thinking one of the volume wires became unsodered even tho I cannt see it.

the blend pot prob was related to my basss, yours may not have one. it is a pot (potentiometer or 'knob') you use to blend between pickups rather than a pickup selector switch

I have opened it, cannt find any loose wires.
Ok so should I take it to like a small store or a place like guitar center to get it fixed?
And Im not looking to buy one, I just wana try out some basses. Im not near good enough to do any nice bass justice.
