I've put together a quick, experimental jam-session track of me singing, playing trombone, and doing a (weird) bit of beat-boxing. I'm planning to make some more (longer and better and properly arranged), but I would like to know from the get-go if I am doing anything horrendously wrong, or anything right.
EDIT
Sorry!!! Forgot to link to it. GET IT HERE (http://www.nfomation.com/uploads/Jam.mp3)
So far, these things I know are problems with the current recording (don't read these until you've heard the track though!):
1. Discrepancy in volume for the tracks
2. Slightly off-beat looping
3. Not exactly the best arranged track, but it's only improv after all with an end bit tacked on (an experiment, let's say)
I'm using a $20 condenser mic from Jaycar, which seems to be able to pick up bass very nicely. With windows +20 decibel boost turned on though, it seems to pick up all the fan noise from the computers in the room, so I turned it off to do all my recordings. Also, I do not have it on a stand (yet).
For the beat-boxing I had it very close to my mouth, for the trombone - as far away as possible without losing the sound or distorting it.
The room I'm currently in is much too echo-ey for brass (I dunno, I like the way it sounds fuller), so I may have to do it some place else in future. I'm not sure - what do you guys think?
Yes, I do know about volume envelopes with CEP, but I did not use them for this mixdown. Do you have any tips on right/wrong ways of using these?
I'm not planning to use samples or MIDI at all - I want to make everything from original sound-bytes I do myself. The main problem I've had so far is getting the looping to stick to the beat correctly. I personally don't believe I need a real set of drums to do a recording with a beat since 'the beat' can be anything...
Thanks in advance for any advice! :)
