Okay from right now until the summer is over I will be upgrading my cymbals and i'm not sure which to buy first as I have no ride and I have a crash and hihats which well be upgraded thorughout the summer. So I was thinking I should just get the ride I found which is a Zildjian Avedis 20" Rock ride.Is it a good idea to but that first since im without a ride and I don't want to upgrade to more beginner cymbals casue you guys/gals were saying it's just a waste of money...
So the real question is "Should I buy the ride and then but the new High-Hats and the crash in the summer when I will have more money?
Thanks

Yes.
I'd try the 21" Avedis Sweet Ride before you go ahead with the Rock. You may find you like it more :)
Edit to VTDS: He has no ride so he should go for that first.

First things first: Avoid all Zildjian ranges with "Z" in the range name. To clarify, do not buy Planet Z, ZBT, ZXT, ZHT or Z Custom. None are worth the money.
Secondly, it is better to buy cymbals one at a time, saving your money for the best cymbals you can buy, then starting again if need be, getting a new cymbal every few months, or even just one a year.
Thirdly, the "accepted" order in which to buy cymbals is this: Hi Hats, Ride, Crash, Secondary Crash or Splash Or China.
Fourth, you don't have to buy Zildjian. Shop around, look at other companies, see what they have to offer. You may find a sound you like better in another company, such as Sabian, Paiste, Istanbul, Bosphorus, Meinl, etc.

You should look into a K heavy ride. It's the best ride imo. Then get some Zildjian A New Beats, then A Zildjian Fast Crash! :thumb:

Yeah. What I said ;)...Makes it easier to take out 3 syllables.
Ride first, then hats and then a crash. But take your time and try some different cymbals out if possible. This is a good time to learn while you are at it.
Whatever you buy, but particularly with the ride, make sure you buy one with a little bit more overtone than you think you need. Once you get onstage, youll need it.
I made the mistake of buying a rock ride because I thought thats what my style required. On its own it had a solid focus "pinggg pingggg" sound with few overtones, but once I got it onstage and added other instruments, that nice ping become a dull "tink tink". The cymbal lost all its life because it didnt have the overtone/wash to help it resonate effectively with a band.

So you are saying a medium ride would be better in a band situation than a rock ride or heavy ride?

I haven't tried the crash, but that ride and the (*drooool*) hats are awesome!

If you don't have a ride, go for it first. I recommend Alchemy Sweet by Istanbul Agop. When you go for your other cymbals, make sure you take your new ride in to the store and match up a crash with your ride. When I help students and pros alike with a new cymbal, I always get them to bring in their favorite pies so we can match up something with them.

To tell you the truth, im a proud owner of an A custom medium ride(2o inches) and i love it, its great in a jazz, rock, whatever, but, if i was only playing rock on stage, or wherever i would definately look into a ride with more overtones than a ping or heavy ride but still with good stick definition, such as an a custom or k ride, an a custom projection, or something of that sort, an A rock ride is an awesome ride, and it may work well in a performance situation depending upon the music, however i personally like to have the washy overtones and stick definition of a medium, i like how it blends with the music, try out different rides when you buy, youll find the one you want

I already have a 20" AAX Stage ride. I was just wondering because if I ever get on stage I want that cymbal to be heard through the band.

i havent had much experience with a stage ride, although one of my good buddies has one, and he seems to like it, from what i heard on the sabian website it is a very nice ride with good overtones, not bad
