Ok... so here's my refinished snare.
http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3681032&q=hi (here's audio... check it out and see if you like the way it sounds. Too deep for my taste, but its sounds like a good rock or punk snare.)

and here's the pics.

Only thing I don't like is how much blank space there is in the 3rd pic, and the clutter near the strainer. Still, awesome snare.

well... I thought about hardware, but I'm not ready to throw down $60.00 dollars on something that isn't guaranteed to bring returns. My checking account is running low and I still have to save at least $30 for the Sonny Rollins concert this Sunday.
It will be a must on my later project, but money is tight right now.

I'll say. That was also the killer for me... but overall I think it's an ok look. When it's incorporated into the set, it looks fine.

don't be surprised by a high "buy it now" price. I'm just gonna push my luck and see what exactly I can push for it. You guys are smart and might not pay as much as I'm gonna put up, but there's some people out there willing to spend that kind of money. a.k.a. rich kids.

It's a Rockstar.
I went to Guitar Center today looking for a Remo Fiberskyn, cause It would look good with it, but they were out. I'm gonna go in tomorrow and purchase a simple Coated Amb and maybe a new reso. Depends...

It would take me a while to get that. plus I'm hoping the buyer will be smart enough to realize that it's his responsibility to change the head.
I don't know... do most buyers anticipate using the heads that come with the drum for a long while.

moogoogaipan

the rice paper is covered with about 15 layers of clearcoat.

Aaron

I think most buyers anticipate buying a new head, but the head itself is very visible to the buyer and can influence purchasing, IMO.

the reason they blend so well is because the finish of the shell is rice paper. I used spray adhesive to cover the standard Tama Rockstar shell with rice paper, painted the picture and then coated it with about 15 layers of clearcoat to seal the image and to secure the paper.

by the way... thanks for the positive response guys. Much better feedback than was expected.

yep, I must go and see him. He's not long for this world... and I don't want to miss an opportunity to see him in person.

In other news. I put a Coated Amb on the drum. I'll get some new audio up... it sounds much crisper now.

So you painted the trees yourself? That's really good work!

So you painted the trees yourself? That's really good work!
Thanks... I enjoy painting.

I was thinking the same thing about a whole kit with that finish. It was such a pain in the *** to strip the stain off that drum though... I think If I do something like that, I'd start from scratch using brand new shells.
Pulling stains out of a drum is the most time consuming, back braking, labor.....
*cries* and I didn't even end up using the wood finish. It's a shame.

The audio sounds good man. Make sure to put you have audio available in your eBay auction.

Comments on the looks. I think, for the most part it looks good for your first one. I don't think it looks professional, but I don't think it looks bad. I think you should have tried for crisper lines in alot parts of it. I know that was probably the look you were going for, but, to me, it sorta looks like someone just took a conte crayon and just made a mark. The blossoms also start to run together in areas, which I think looks good for the most part, but there are a couple of parts where the effect is lost on me. It's hard to explain, becuase I think them running together looks fine in alot of parts, but then there are parts where it looks a little off (like, in your 4th picture down, on the blossoms right above the butt.) I think the clear coat over the rice paper looks a little strange too. To me it sorta looks like shiny paper that you glued to the shell, rather then a gloss finish. It also looks like it sorta ripped or something near the badge.

Over all it looks good though man. There are just a few areas that could use improvement. I like that it's very unique, and something you don't see on alot of shells. That's going to help alot when you go to sell it. I would hold off on selling it for a little while though. I use spray adhesive alot, and I usually buy the best I can find, but I've never found one that holds indefinetly. I'm sure the clearcoat would add some life to it, but I can't imagine it would add too much. Maybe try contact cement next time. Dunno how it'd work on rice paper, but I know alot of people use it for wraps. Keep it up though man :thumb:

I appreciate the feedback.
2 things I must clarify.... this isn't an in your face thing... :smoke:
1) I'm not a novice in the art field in the least... much work displayed in New York from time to time... I am a novice in the Chinese Brush work... But everything is characteristic. The pedals often run together because it's about the flow, not about sharpness. That's stylistic.
2) I didn't like the flow of some parts, but I'm a perfectionist and I'd critique my art till it hurt... so I have to just sometimes let things go.

As far as this stuff goes, It's gonna hold pretty well... It's not just clearcoat.
It's several layers of contact cement dried and then after some drying time a thin sprayed layer of spray-adhesive... guaranteed stick. I've used this method for sticking paper to metal and it's very effective.
Then the clearcoat was applied over top.

but, that aside, thank you. I really do like feedback... but I'm not gonna wait. I'm gonna put it up anyway, there's someone somewhere who will pay money for this... hopefully. I'm not very patient, plus it's not like I have anything to wait for. I'm a student right now, so just going for it isn't gonna hurt...
tis all in good fun.:chug:

Ah, you did not say you used contact cement before, or else I wouldn't have mentioned it.

But yeah, I understand what that type of art is about, and the comment about the blossoms was pretty much for that one part. For the most part I liked how they flowed together. Just not in that spot. And I know what you mean about criticizing yourself to death. I'm probably more of a novice about art and I used critique myself too harshly. Any more I don't take it too seriously..but if you're going to be selling something you gotta try to make sure it's perfect. Good luck in the sale though.

edit: where did your post go??

yea... sorry.. didn't think not mentioning it would be bad... cool though.

no joke, though, perfection is key to selling. But some people enjoy this imperfect art... which is great, cause it makes my job easier.
But I just want to get this drum gone. Even if it sells for just $200 (breaking even). I just need some money to get a clean start with some smooth shells. The finish underneath the stain was damaged so I was forced to cover it with something

[edit] my other post was long and windful... this is short and gets my point across... my other sounded harsh also

I know... but money is the essence here. Once I get this gone, then I'll have enough money to start fresh and use the real ideas in my head and keep these drums clean. This one wasn't to par at all for what I want, but it came out decent... I hated hiding the artwork, but it looks alright and judging by the reactions of people in here, there's gonna be someone somewhere who wants this drum...even if for the minimum ($200)

Heh, way to call him a sucker.

No, I know what you mean, I wasn't saying there wasn't going to be anyone who would want it. What I was trying to say was that I'd feel wrong selling something that I didn't feel I did a professional quality job on it. At least for that amount of money. nah, I feel ya. I know what you mean.. its cool:smoke:

[edit] but I would only feel bad if I knew it was going to fall apart. This snare has rarely been used since I replaced it pretty much as soon as I bought my snare... and that paper is on there good. It's not some flimsy paper... this rice paper is thick and it's extremely tough... I've been watching it since I finished to make sure... it soaked in all sorts of clearcoat hardening goodness.
If I thought that it was going to fall apart, then I'd most certainly not sell it.

Good, and that's the main thing that counts, that you don't want to sell a sub-par product. I'm sure you'll find someone who's looking for a snare just like this. I hope you can get what you want for it. I hope to one day be confident enough in my drum-smithing abilities to try to sell one. I really wanna try to get good at wood burning. I love the look of shells with art that's woodburned into them.

realistic, shmealistic... go for stylistic. As long as it communicates what you want it to.. that's what makes art. Drawing something to look realistic can be done by any artist... truly making your own style is difficult.
You'll find something that makes sense to you... just practice and imitate lots of different styles...
same approach as to drumming.

Ming-a-Ling
03-23-2006, 08:31 PM
I know. I suppose I should have clarified. I draw quite frequently. It's usually pretty cartoony, and lately I've said to hell with shading for the most part. What I guess I meant to say is, I need to get back into practice of drawing with a hard light source for more realistic shading. Normally I just do line work and a small bit of shading, which might work in wood burning, I'll definetly try it, but if it doesn't look quite right, I'll have to try more shading too.
