Ok so here's the deal. I have a lab report due in tomorrow (well, today actually, but that's not important) but to actually analyse the data for it, I need the images we got.

Now, a friend emailed these images to me as attachments. She sent them as .TIFs and .BMPs which were the only file formats we could save them as. Only problem is, when I download and save these files (of either type) they wont open in any program. Paintdotnet says something about an error opening the file, paint says I have to close more programs to free up enough memory to open it (even when nothing is open) and image viewer just says there's no preview available.

So what can I do?

Are the files corrupted somehow?

Can you try hosting one somewhere to see if you can see it then?

could you upload the images to tinypic or imageshack and look at them there, or do you need to paste these images into your lab report?

What I was thinking is that if he hosted it, he'd at least be able to tell if the file was okay, and it was actually his computer.

Tinypic and photobucket say its an invalid format, even though its a .BMP

they'll be too big to upload to imageshack. tiff and bitmap files are huge by comparison to a jpeg. you can send them to me if you want, i'll check them out and convert them to something smaller and more manageable.

Photobucket is meant to shrink them down if they're too big, but it doesn't even do that. They don't open in any program I have on my computer, and I even tried emailing them to my other account in case there was a problem downloading them from hotmail, but the email wont even go through...

thats why i said to send them to me. i have several image manipulation programs on here. if i can't view it, it's not an image file.

Maybe the files are too big for your email to handle.

Where did your friend get these images?

Off the computer in the lab. I think it could be a size thing- I just managed to open the smallest of the files.

But I can't even send them again- I've tried sending to my hotmail account and my Uni account and they just don't go through. I reckon I'll have to try and make do with the pictures I can open.

lol

But she's actually quite good at computers. Too bad she's a complete bitch when it comes to anything else.

Hush you. :frown:

Did Jonzey go away?

Nvm, there you are.

How weird that they ended up as giant files.

Nope, doesn't open in that either. Invalid or unsupported TIF file, it says. Anyway I've got 5 of them open, but it refuses to open them if they're over 0.22MB, which most of them are.

You need Photoshop to open tifs, usually paint opens bmps. If you can't find photoshop try Gimp, I've never used it but it's supposed to be a free version of photoshop.

The files are almost certainly corrupt. Irfanview opens tif files pretty easily. If it doesn't read them, Photoshop or gimp won't do any better.

EDIT: did you install the irfanview plugin package as well as the viewer? it probably won't help, but it does include a lot of obscure formats.
