View Full Version : How/where to mount splashes

As all of you know (or should know ;D) i am getting a splash, maby even 2! Wuuhuu! And then i started thinking i have it all covered but today i started thinking and i came to the solution that i really dont know where/ how to mount the splash.
So if you could, post some pics where you mount them and pics of your mounting gear. Thanks!

my single splash is mounted pretty much right in the middle of my bass drum, right between the two toms if there were two (I'm set up as a 4 piece now).
a lot of people seem to mount them closer to their hats, on the left....but I don't like doing this because I like to use the splash in conjunction with a snare accent a lot of times, so it's nice to give myself enough room for both arms.
oh, and to mount em, look into boom clamps....or whatever they're called. I have one by pearl and one by gibralta, and the gibralta seems superior (and even cheaper I think). they call it 'gibralta grabber cymbal arm (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Drums/Percussion/Parts/Hardware?sku=446265)'.

As mentioned boom arms and mines mounted right in the middle of my bass over my rack tom and ride(4 piece)

Does anyone else prefer the look when you have a heavy duty boom stand to mount a tiny splash. Ideally i would like 8, 10 and 12 inch splashes mounted in a row high to low but i'm to damn poor to afford any splashes atm.

No. Its a total waste of money and space

I am pro stands...I hate clamps because it can be a pain in the arse to get them very tight, so that they don't move.
I experiment a lot with my splash positions, but I always end up going back to the good old favourite;

i got a crash cymbal on a stand thats to the left of my 1st mounted tom when facing the kit, and my splash is connected with a grabber arm thats mounted on that cymbal stand and angled so that its more or less in between both my mounted toms. it goes crash splash crash in a sort of half circle in front of my kit

over the hats

Over the hats, or stacked upside down on top of a crash. That's a cool way to do it, especially if you're lacking stands or clamps.

I like stacking them inverted... and keeping them a little closer to the main action of the hats/snare.

That's the way to do it.
Is that a crack in the A crash, Josiah?
Josiah
03-22-2006, 03:04 PM
Sadly yes, though it was stopped via a drill hole.
The crack happend because the cymbal was dropped, it nicked the edge and thus.. started to crack there. Thankfully cymbals aren't that expensive and the guy who dropped it offered to pay for half, wich I declined cause he's a good guy and it was an accident.
Still sounds great though, just add's a touch of "trash" to it. That was the last Med-Thin cymbal I bought because of that though.

That's not so bad then.
I'd like to add that your kit looks very cleanly setup and easy to get around, though I'm sure if anyone knows that, it's you. Before I ask about specs, I'm guessing it's in the setup thread, yes?

Get a Gibraltar bracket. I saw that somebody else had one, they work great, about $20.

ive got my splash mounted right over my hi hats...on a straight stand...i like to have it close to my left hand so i can do little accents coming off the hihats or snare...id rather get a clamp or something to mount it though because the legs of the stand piss me off

I have my Wuhan 12" china under a Sabian B8 China splash (very trash and very sexy) then I have a 6" Zildjian A Custom splash inverted on that. Then I have a 8" splash in front of my toms

Nothin, just didn't put the aux one for the picture. My setup changes around a lot from gig to gig, music to music. Pretty rare I actually use the double kick.. the master side I just us as a single.

Thanks, I'm lazy so I don't like to work to hit my drums! Haha
Can't remember if it is in that thread..
I dunno, that's my beech customs, 8,10,14,16, 22x17.5 hmm 13x5 maple vented snare, 10x5 maple snare
looks like my 17 a med-thin, i think that's an 8" k splash over a 12" sabian AA, 19 or 18? a custom projection, 22" paiste 2002, 12/14 zildjian oritnal trash hats and my super uber secret sabian hats wich everyone loves and nobody believes are 1st generation 14" pro hats.. um yea that's whats in that picture i think.
I have much more.. but that's too much crap to list haha.
And yes I need a new seat for my throne... again! See what happens when you play alot?

1) I have my 12" and 10" outside my hats [12" closer, 10" a quarter over the 12" about 2" higher]
2) My 8" splash inverted on my 20" crash bell [the crash is setup as a ride at the moment]
3) My mini-china mounted over of 20" crash with a saw blade stacked on it with rivets chucked inside between the two for a sizzle-hat/white-noise effect

Nice. Hows the 8,10,14,16 setup work? I've been thinking about looking into it, because I like having two toms "up top", but I like my ride and hats in really close, so the obvious solution is smaller toms.

btw, i played a show last night and the bands drummer we were playing with had a splash that was so tight it didnt move at all on the stand...how tight should you really put your spalsh? Same as Crashes?

Man that splash has a short life. All cymbals should be able to move freely without the wingnut choking them.
How i have my 2 setup:

I mount em over the rack toms for quick accents, a good place also is right over the hats, but I like to be able to hit them coming off anything: my left most splash is easily hitable from the hats anyway.

eventually i'll over take Half Life and have 3 rows of splashes:
1) 8" 10" and 12" Wuhans over my hats [from under my main crash across to the outside of my hats]
2) 8" Pro stacked on the 12" Wuhan [to start the second level]
and 10" AA in line with the 8" Pro further out.
3) 10" and 12" Ks in front over my 22" K Heavy

I tried this today. I took a unused top hi-hat mount, put a 8" splash on it so the bottom of the mount is facing up. Then stacked it on my 17" crash by clamping it where the wing nut for the top of the stand would go. I thought it would get in the way, but so far its working out great.
