Yeah, it's a Dell, POS blah, blah, blah. Just want to do some things to make it better. Primarily: New Hardrive, RAM, and a good video card.

I bought a Maxtor 250 Gig harddrive. Sata Ultra Series. I've got a few days to take it back if it's not compatible with a Dell Dimension 8300. So that's the easy first question, is it?

Secondly, I'd like to use it as a master and partition drives on it, games, programs, music etc. Is there a way to start it off as a slave to move all the data on it, then load Windows to make the integration easier? I bought a whole bunch of CD-RWs incase I need to make tons of Data cds...

Third. Can I get some recommendations for what you think are the best video cards for the price range and what are worth buying? Like:

$0-50:
$50-100
$100-150
$150-200
$200-250

The site I'm looking at (http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,39023849,10004197,00.htm) lists the dimension 8300 as having an intel 874P chipset, which isn't listed on intel's own website.

However, the chipset does seem to support SATA hard drives, so you should be fine in that respect. Can't help you any more than that though, ask REINER or something.

You could move the files onto the drive as a master just like you could if it was a slave, no?

For the vid card, I suggest going to newegg, then just looking in each price range and rank results by best reviews. newegg usually is good about reliable reviews.

My thanks to you both, I'll check them out and look into the suggestions.

Better make sure your mobo will have AGP/PCIe slots because sometimes they remove them to lower manufacturing costs, and for other business reasons.

From what I can tell it has AGP, PCI Express didn't come tell the 8400 model. Bit of a bummer, but I'll manage.

Thanks again. :thumb:
