Basically the sweetest crust out there. Everyone needs to listen to them.
Dystopia formed in Orange County, California in 1992. Members included Todd Keisling (bass), who also played in early grindcore-punk band, Confrontation. Matt Parillo (guitar, vocals) who originally played in hardcore punk band Cantankerous. Matt also played guitar in the now defunct, Mindrot (Relapse Records) before forming Dystopia. Dino Sommese (drums/vocals) originally played in Carcass-esque grind band Carcinogen. Original Dystopia singer, Dan Kaufman also played in Mindrot.
Dystopia started off as a side project between Mindrot members Dan and Matt but quickly came to be one of the most closely followed and influential crust punk bands since the inception of this style of music. Dystopia is distinguished by their tuned down guitars, heavy sound. They lack the traditional d-beat style crust influence and most followers of this music scene would agree that they have pioneered their own sound.

Listening to Human = Garbage now. It's decent, I liked the Jello sound clip in Sanctity.
EDIT: Finished listening. It was boring. It carried on and on and used way too many ****ing soundclips.

The reason they don't play shows is because they don't feel like it? That's kinda gay. They should play shows.

I love Dystopia so much. But I must say, one, I wouldn't consider them crust, and two, the Aftermath is better.

What other bands can you call sludge though? I consider them crust, personally, mostly for the reason that they mix punk and metal perfectly. Generas aside. Either way they ****ing rock...hard.
Edit: And for those of you who havent found it yet...

****in sweet, that video was filmed at the Gilman. Probably from the balcony; that's what it's for. We're gonna film a show there next time we play there.
As for other sludge bands, Kylesa might fit in that category; the only thing I can describe Kylesa as is melodic sludge. Tragedy also touches on sludge. But Dystopia is like the definition of sludge.

Tragedy doesn't seem very sludgey to me.

I don't think Tragedy or HHIG are sludge...I thought sludge was more like Eyehategod or Corrosion of Conformity. Tragedy is just sort of a crust-ish hardcore band.

It sounds like one of those dumb genres like emo violence or something. I don't feel like there are enough bands that fit the description for it to be a real genre.

There are plenty of sludge bands.

thats just a few (not entirely accurate though)
edit: this is better:
Late 80s: the Dirty South. Somewhere between the Louisiana Gulf Coast and NC towns like Charlotte and Raleigh, this business of sludge began. Inspired by the aggressive hardcorepunk of BLACK FLAG and the grooves of SABBATH, bands began to fuse the feedback squeals of early COC with the crawling vibrations of CONFESSOR and downtuning of THE MELVINS. Names like EYEHATEGOD, SEWER PUPPET, TUNGSTEN, ACID BATH, THE SLUGS and GRAVEYARD RODEO started the ball rolling, later morphing into more familiar names like BUZZOV*EN and CROWBAR. By the early nineties, things began to spread to to the coasts and midwest. Unlike many other forms of heavy music that began to die on the vine by 1995, sludge just seemed to loom larger and uglier. It's a heavy music tofu -- it mixes perfectly with almost any genre (grind, death, black), which is why so many hybrid styles have emerged since its inception. We've tried to focus on its undiluted, original form, which by nature meanders tempo-wise between "Born Too Late" and "Spray Paint the Walls". Also look for dark, senseless movie samples, avalanches of feedback, and odes to chemical dependency.

I'm not really sure about Dystopia being a sludge band though.
