Arrested Development. An American show which is infinitely smarter than any British comedy ever made. And I'm saying that as a Brit.

I'm not sure about smart, but it is certainly extremely well written.
I've only seen the first season and bits of the third, so it didn't quite make it into my post- not yet, anyway.

I'm not sure about smart, but it is certainly extremely well written. There are so many oblique and obscure pop-culture and self references in it. There are also tiny visual gags going on in the background all the time which you don't really pick up on until maybe the third or fourth time you watch it. A lot of people would never ever pick up on them. I think that makes it a smart show.
Scrubs is my favorite at the moment.

When I was younger, I loved shows like That 70's Show, and Fresh Prince etc.
Now I'd say my favourites are Shameless, The Office, Peep Show, shows like that really. Mostly British comedy I guess, but then American comedy when I was younger.

UHM, HELLO?!
SEINFELD IS THE BEST SHOW EVER PUT ON TV.
No joke.
If it weren't for him, alot of your sitcoms wouldn't be out today.
Arrested it heavily overated now, to the point where I've met people who like the show purely because it's smart, yet they failed to spot half the humour. I'm a fan, but I wouldn't consider it as one of the best sitcoms ever personally.
Scrubs I would. I've always been a huge fan, the plots are great and the humour isn't light and easy also.

Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm take joint second for me. Larry David is a true great of comedy. Right up there with the Marx Brothers and Woody Allen.

Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Fresh Prince, I'm starting to get into Becker also.
I wouldn't class things like Arrested Development, Futurama, Blackadder and MASH as sitcoms, really. I love all four, though.
