View Full Version : ATK, just like the AK47 a perfect instrument?

Depends on whatever you want to do with it, true.
But.. Well?
Soundwise I'm looking into something like a Musicman and the Musicmans I've played all had this ugly thick neck. I really disliked that. So today this beautiful bass named the ATK came by. It is supposed to be one of the better basses that imitate a Stingray sound and add something else from themself.

Now I've heard that the newer ATK's (which aren't made in Japan) aren't so good anymore. This bass is made in 2000. The price he wants for it is 350 euro (425 dollars) and I want to talk him down to underneath the 300 euro (365 dollars). My current bid is 260 (315 dollars).
A little info on these basses might be nice :) I know some guy from Slipknot uses them instead of his Warwick's?

Damn idk anything about it but i sure want that bass. Ill buy it for 290. Paul from slipknot uses Warwick's but i never seen him use this kind abass before. So many times ive seen them live. It kinda reminds me of the bass Justin Chancellor used on a video i saw but then again wut do i know. So yea, from the looks of it I LIKE! The sound, i have no clue. Wish i could help but just really postin sayin i like the looks and id be a dumb@$$ to buy it too! WOOHOO!

eww, glittery.
Im sure it sounds great but damn i hate that paint
kilian

Wait I've calculated the dollars to euro's wrong  Let me edit it. It's at the local kind of ebay where I bid at it.
EDIT:
And about the colour: I kind of fancy the colour! I don't think it looks bad at all with the glitter on it. Even the maple neck looks good then. But it's all about the sound/playability now. And I still need some info :smoke:

offsprings bassist is great for what he does. A lot of people think he just does rooting, but some of his stuff is great. If you want i can upload a song with a killer bassline that he uses this bass on.

What type of pickup is that?
mastrrbasser
03-20-2006, 09:47 AM
ON the other ones i've seen it uses a MM pickup. I'm pretty sure those are the pole pieces instead of the metal dots we're used to. So if you bend a note the volume doens't cut out. but i could be wrong, i know next to nothing about electronics.

Your link doesn't work mastrrbasser..
Painkiller: well.. I like the tone out of a Musicman and you can also switch this pickup into series/paralel/single coil. So basically it is two pickups (with a third to humbuck) in one. :thumb:

Paul has used these as well as Stingrays on stage with Shitknot.
Although they don't make them anymore, they're very highly regarded.

He's pretty good, I wasnt bashing him :thumb:
But at some songs, like "the kids aren't all right", he does nothing but playing the same stuff all over. It fits the song and the song is great, but I mean, you could do it a little more interesting. :p

yeah he's a pretty good bassist, but he is a punk at heart. He has some pretty groovy stuff though, and he's great at finding the pocket in songs like "i choose."

did you ever look at the mm sterlings? has a series/paralel/single coil switch, and have narrower necks and slimmer bodies. they are definately more than that ibanez though.
but that ibanez looks pretty cool too. have you played it before?
kilian
03-20-2006, 04:38 PM
^^Nope I haven't played it before. But those Sterlings start at 1300 or something (at the used market). So those are a bit out of the picture..

You know what bass use used on their mate.feed.kill.repeat album? I thought that tone was pretty hot.

my main bass is an ATK, mines slightly different than that tho, i have a jazz pickup in the neck posistion and mine has no pickguard and is a sexier colour. ALos it is a five string tenoer, woo.
I'd buy it if i were you, if it any thing like mine you can accomplish loads of different tones and is lovely to play on.
kilian
03-21-2006, 08:08 AM
^^Thanks for the input! How would you compare the neck to a Jbass neck?
Mitchell Royce
03-21-2006, 03:37 PM
Neck on those is more like a P. It has a lot of that Stingray vibe tone and feelwise. Two good bassist friends of mine use them so I've gotten quite a bit of playtime with them. I really don't understand why they were discontinued, I'm seeing them all over the place so they could not have sold that bad.

The bass player in the band that I sing/play guitar in has one of those.
It's an absolute SEX machine. It is so ridiculously good. I'd kill him and take it if it weren't lefthanded. SO GOOD.
Sounds amazing, Wait, no, amazing should be in caps lock. It sounds AMAZING. Looks great too, feels really solid. It's a beast.

Well, looks like I'm going to buy one :D If I can like the neck though, I like Jbass style necks. But my dad's P plays fine enough. The Stingray neck however..
The only problem is that I can't buy the blue one in the beginning of this thread due to lack of funds right now. :upset:

They are very highly coveted, probally the most out of any ibanez bass. Very solid and great tone. I heard someone on talkbass say that they do the stingray sound better than a stingray.
