im getting a Behringer UB1202FX. do I just plug a mic into it, and plug the mixer into the computer? do I need a certain software? plz help.

Well, that depends on what you plan to do with your setup. If you are just using your computer to hear things (not recommended) then you likely won't need any software. If you're like the rest of us, and have a little bit of a recording bug, then yes, you need some kind of software. In the case of just quickly recording a song, so you have referance for later, you can probably get by with just the windows sound recorder.
When you want to start to throw together a rough demo, that's when things get interesting. You'll need an interface, something to get your sound out of the mixer and into the computer. This can be as simple as your stock soundcard, or much more complex. Then you'll want decent multi-track software (for over-dubbing sounds to create music) I've heard great things about Audacity, especally the price tag of free.
