i have an audition approaching rather quickly. the requirements are

Bass

* 12 major scales and arpeggios, two octaves
* One slow and one fast etude from a standard etude book (Simandl, Hertl)
* A solo transcription from any bass transcription book
* Sightreading
* Two of the following tunes (or similar tunes): 1. Straight No Chaser by Thelonius Monk; 2. Satin Doll by Duke Ellington; 3. Blue Bossa by Kenny Dorham; 4. Oleo by Sonny Rollins; 5. Ladybird by Tadd Dameron; 6. Tune-Up by Miles Davis

i have every requirement nailed except for the one in bold. Does anybody want to suggest a book that has a slow and fast etude? Thanks for the help.

I can't help you with that, but is this for some kind of Governor school thing? I had to do something like this and had to do Blue Bossa too, I still have the powertab I made for it.

Well i'm majoring in music in sound recording at UNH (bachelor of science). But this is for western connecticut state university(jazz studies). I'm doing this audition for scholarship reasons (if i do well i can possibly transfer it to UNH(which is where i wanna go).

I just finished copying blue bossa out of the real book and transposed it to bass cleff as a matter of fact.

thanks for the offer, but i need the actual music from the book. A copy will probably disqualifie me.

How come? If it's for an audition, you should just memorize it and then you don't need to worry about anything. Anyway, I would check out simandl.

Isn't Simandl for double bass?

What are some really good Jazz-oriented etude books? I want to Jaco my left hand. :naughty:

Seriously though, one of my best friends in Miami (and former drummer) joined this awesome band and their bassist blows me out of the water. I feel some pressure to get up to speed.

I play from Simandl on Double Bass, it has some faster ones tword the end, and for the slow it's got tons. You can get the book off amazon.

haha, music schools do that all the time acutually. Anyway, no worries if you don't wanna. Swing by your local music store and pick up an etude book. They're a dime a dozen.

every audition i've been to required the actual book the music came from. They had the photocopied music there, but they wanted to see that you practiced out of a book rather than cheating and using tabs and whatnot. I don't know, it's completely bonkers, but that's how it's done around here.

Do you need to know 12 major scales or just the major scale in every key??

okay, then find me a copy of it. I jsut got back from guitar center, barnes and nobles, daddy's junky music, and borders, and none of them have the book. I don't care at this point. i need the music. Bittorrent didn't even have it.

Check that. Amazon has tons. I can send you copys of etudes by tuesday of next week if you want. Otherwise someone else will have to get you the music. I think that you won't find etude books in normal book stores. These books are considered music, so you'll have to go to a music shop. However if guitar center didn't have it...
