Musicians with no theory play what sounds good to them.
Musicians that do have theory know what will sound good before they play it, why it sounds good, and how to make it sound better. Best case scenario, anyway. ;)

If you want to be serious about music, or even if you want to be good at playing and making music you need to have some knowledge of theory.

Even if you know theory you still have to be creative. :p

Good music comes from a combination of theory and creativity.
When I'm having issues coming up with something off the top of my head, I revert to building music by theory and composition to get ideas.
Theory is a very useful tool, and it is difficult to understand parts of it, but it will give you much more vast of a knowledge and understanding of music.

theory is great, you know why things sound good to you which helps you to create things that sound good. Dont listen to anyone who tells you it compramises your creativity either.
