View Full Version : Guitarist Wants Some Low End
Yes, I'm a guitarist but I'm getting a bass in the next month or so. The only problem is, what wattage amp to go for. I hear you need 3x the amount of power or something to gig with, but I'm not really sure so I just thought I'd see what you guys recommend. I want a gig worthy amp that I can also do a bit of practice with that's obviously not too expensive. Any help will be appreciated.

Ok so first off wattage doesn't equal volume, but it can be a good spot to start. I would reccommend a 100w combo amp with eather a 1x15" or 2x10" speakers for doing small gigs.

2X the guitarists wattage should be enough.
As for an amp you could get the fender rumble for around $300, or you could go used and get a better amp, possibly for less.
Cheers guys, sounds good. My guitarist uses 30w amps but they're tube, so would you say 100w solid state is enough? Cheers guys.

I jam with a few guitarists, one has a 60w all tube amp and the other has a 30w solid state amp. The guy with the 60w plays at about volume 4 and the other guys cranks, I keep up with a 100w Yorkville with a 15" speaker.

As far as wattage goes it doesn't matter.. I used a 15 watt Laney to keep up with my guitarists 60 watt marshall. Sometimes it was too loud.. But now I have a 300 watt GK and therefore a little more headroom.
I'll just have to try them in the shop and see what I think, I just wanted a basic guideline.
BTW, what do you guys think of OLP? I'm most likely getting the five string Stingray copy.

Not a bad bass, good for the money. IMO the ibanez gsr200 is much better for about the same price.

I'll have a look, thanks for your help, it was a lot better than "lawlz get a proper instrument" that I got from guitarists.

meh, If you like that mid ranged sound. But it is a stingray copy... Im hoping you have or will play it before you buy it. What genre you shooting for. I suggest a veristile bass like a MIM jazz it can pretty much do anything you want it to do. and the price is pretty solid. I mean if this is just you wanting to pick up bass some Id say start with that.
I play classic rock pretty much exclusively. I was looking at an Epiphone EB-0 because that's what Andy Fraser played (but the Gibson). I think the jazz bass is slighlty over my price range. That Ibanez looks cool though.

It is great, very well built, great versitility and good tone. If you don't like the ibanez, the yamaha rbx170 is about the same price and is often compaired to the ibanez.

If you're going classic rock, you probably want the OLP over the Ibanez.

I would not say that, the ibanez could get the classic rock tone much better IMO. It has more boom/bassyness to it than the OLP does, the OLP is very midrangy. More so than a p/j set up would be.

It doesn't have to, but a lot of it does. Well at least the stuff that I listen to.

The OLP Stingray is very versatile, and while not the exact stingray sound, it is close, and if modded with a new preamp and pickup, it would be very close to a Stingray.

I love my OLP. Really reliable. Solid construction, good sound. Great bass for the price.
