View Full Version : Sustaining hammer-ons for prolonged time

I've been listening to alot of "Fungus Amongus" and I hear Dirk using alot of hammer ons and sustaining them for a long time, like on Like near the intro of "Hilikus". Is there anything adjustment wise, or technquie wise to get notes to sustain for a long time, especially during hammer-ons? I play a Schecter C-4.

Pretty much all it is finger endurance and having low action doesnt hurt.

I figured my action was fine, but I haven't had it adjusted since i got it 10 months ago, it hasn't given me problems, so I guess I might dick with it for a bit.

He also might have certin effects that prolong his sustain too like a compresser for example

A compressor wont sustain your notes.

You can get Sound-Hold pedals, but i doubt thats what hes doing

Just pull off when you finish the hammer on?

a compressor will make your hard attacks softer, and an exapnder will make your softer stuff louder

Thats what I'm doing, like a continous hammer-on pull-off, its just I can't keep the volume from dying out soon, I'll try dicking with a compressor and check my processor to see if I can find something.

What I think is:

You're thinking a hard hammer-on will sustain longer, which is not always the case. The harder you hit a note, the faster the decay is. If you keep your volume high and do the hammer-on lighter, it will sustain and you'll still be able to hear it at the same volume.

its all about finger strength..its just hammerons and pullofs fast together, and if you listen to hilikus closely his sound dies out a little bit too near the end of that little line before he goes into the main riff...just practice and get stronger fingers

You just need to build up finger strenght. And when you pull off, try pulling off to the side and kinda pluck the string.

...

You mean a trill?

All that takes is finger strength and practice. Also try what neato said about pulling off to the side.

all finger strength.. I can sustain hammer ons and pull offs forever if.. just build up strength..
