when my band practices, you can NEVER hear the vocals over the instruments....

now, i have a mic, i just dont know what i should hook it up to. Im pretty sure my guitarists amp only has 1 input, any suggestions?

That's your only decent solution. Here's a little trick you might be able to make use of, save up for a powered speaker like the Yamaha MSR-100 (link below) and it has it's own mic pre. It's only 100 watts, so it's nothing that'll blow ear drums off, but you should be able to hear yourself much better. The other plus side is, when you go out to gig, if you have built up your own monitoring system, you can rent a bigger PA for the house for the same amount of money, and what you hear will on stage will be more like what you heard at rehearsal.
