LAST MONTH WINNERS:
Pop-up Box (12/8 Blues) = 5 points
Daddy/ben (Last Stand) = 4 points
Bub (Always on My Mind)
Ok guys. I'm running the show this month. It'll be a good one.
Thanks for everyone who participated last month. The winner of January will be posted here shortly.
How It Works:
Some other MXers and I have decided that it would be a good idea to have a song MAKING challenge (Writing and recording your own actual song with instruments and the usual song essentials, midi is allowed, unless specified otherwise.) Here is how it works. We will list the rules for the song. Whether it have lyrics, be in a certain key, etc. Anybody can enter in. You need to register to enter. You record the song the way you like in any genre you want (unless specified other wise). All you need to do is post a link to the mp3 on your soundclick. Then it will be posted on the MX Song Making Challenge soundclick page (http://www.soundclick.com/mxsongmakingchallenge). By the deadline time (proboably about a month), we will post a poll with all the songs listed. We will let the other MXers vote on which one they like the best. They will have one week to vote. They can only pick one. You can vote for yourself of course. Then we look at the polls and see who has the most amount of votes. They will be crowned the winner and get 5 points. The songs will then be archived with their placement as the description. The archived songs can be viewed here. (http://www.soundclick.com/mxsongmakingchallengearchive) You'r song will be posted without your username next to it. This way we can keep it fair.
How To Record:
If you have never recorded before you should spend some time looking around the jam session. Please do searches for your question before you ask it. For a free audio multitracking editor check out Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) or Kristal (http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/). They are both very good and free! You can use anything you want though.
Rewards:
Points are awarded:
1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 4 points
3rd place: 3 points
4th place: 2 points
5th place: 1 point
The contestants will be put on a list in this thread. 1st place on top, 2nd place second and so forth with the amount of points next to their name. We will just keep going with this untill the end of the year. At the end of the year the person with the most points will possibly get an award. We will have to figure out what the mods can do for us. Maybe a big avatar or something.
This Months Guidelines:
Theme: Write an instrumental piece. Doesn't matter what genre or style. You have till the end of April, so that's plenty of time.
Rules:
You have to represent the theme through music or through lyrics.
The song has to be at least three minutes long.
Midi and other audio is allowed.
When you get done post it on your soundclick and make it available for download. Then send me an email to [e-mail pending] with a link to your soundclick and tell me which song is the one you would like to enter. I will download them and put them on the MX Song Making Challenge soundclick.
The song can be in any key, any genre.
If you are lacking an instrument, just leave it out. Theres no point in ruining your song with a crappy drum beat (Unless you can make one you like.). Just leave it out. This is fun. So do your own thing.
This Months Registered Competitors
Yes the rules have changed. This way if we get all the songs in we can go ahead and have the competition. Either way there will be one week of letting the forumers listen and have them vote. The list of people goes here. When they person is finished and signifies it, they get a star next to their name.

Any form of cheating will get you disqualified. You may not copy any one elses song and it must be your own. I understand some things sound similar sometimes, but lets not get more than similar okay?

Im in for this, Ive been waiting for the april one so I could jump in, but I have a question as to the theme (which I love cuz Ive been wanting to work on an insturmental), but if I had like a choir in it to increase some tension, is that okay? Not singing words, just along with the melody.

Man, that's a really broad theme
*ponders*
I can get the song done, but I'll have to see what I can do about finding some recording gear (and knowledge, haha) - all I've got is a fairly lousy laptop mic and I'm not all that up with how to improve recording quality :(.

dont listen to erotomania. I do all my songs midi, unless there are drum parts. It's perfectly acceptable.
and to whomever asked if they could use a choir... that's cool also... as long as it is for harmonic effects and they use oohs or aahs...

I must admit I haven't started yet, but I'm quite sure I'll deliver a piece in time. I'm a little anxious as there seems to be many people involved. If I come up with something I think is very mediocre I might drop out. Yet, I said the same thing in the beginning of the previous compo which I just finished my work for, and I ended up delivering it. I'll probably - hopefully - 'make it' in one way or other. After all, there is still 13 days left if I'm not mistaken.

Let me say that I used an application (Modplug tracker) and I didn't spend time on collecting the best sounding instruments. SO; let's hope my compositional skills (if any at all?) will save me this time. The composing time was a few hours, but I really wanted to finish now before the deadline.

Today or tomorrow?
Meh.
Well, I've been insanely busy, but I've managed to get an ...alright... recording happening of my piece that I composed way back in January (but never had the time to record in order to submit for the competition). That graveyard one. Thought I may as well do the two things at once. Lucky I could find the notation for it, but I was missing a page so I improv'd a little in one section, lol.
Anyway, I only had the time for a couple of takes and it's clipping in one section every time I record it... still working on that. Should be able to get it done tonight, even though I'm not too proud of the playing (piano definitely =/= one of Trea's main instruments).

There's still some time left. I made my entry in a couple of hours last night, but it ended up too short, so I'll have to create some additional parts now.
If you've got a lot of inspiration, you'll make it even in a few hours. If you're afraid of the quality due to few hours of composing, well - I am too!

Haha, it's crap and I hate it :). The recording that is.
But hey, I have no idea about:
a) vst's; forcing me to record in the effort not to use a really pathetic midi sound;
b) playing piano (I've only ever really played it to compose & record this);
c) recording gear and the the hell it started speeding up/clipping on me.
and having to record all 9 minutes in about 2 takes after not playing it (or the instrument) for 3 months doesn't help either, lol.
I should've/would've done a flamenco arrangement or something but I didn't have time :(.
