Ok... just for the sake of showcasing development, I'm posting the sketches I just drew up for my design of my snare drum that I'm refinishing.
I have taken off the old clearcoat and stain and I'm going to leave a natural finish, but this design will be painted on the shell as an accent with little bitty cherry blossoms to add some depth.
Keep in mind, this is not a finished product, I just sketched this out in a couple of minutes...

Just for the sake of saying so, cause I know someone will try and do this...
this is just for the sake of showcasing my ideas, I'm not changing it to suit anyone's desire. I know what I'm doing, just enjoy the art.

by the way, the dragon will be breathing fire onto the Tama badge... if you wondering what that diamond is. And that image is literally 44" long

umm... i'll blame it on the preliminariness (word?)... I couldn't find a good position for them at the moment so I'm just letting them not be there for now. I'll add them later...

If only you did that to your entire kit, ala Chad Smith's octopus kit. But it looks awesome as it is, just for the snare.

The picture is going to go around and around and around and around and around and around the snare yo. 44 Inchs= Circumfrence. R= Radius. You know Pi.

like 2 PI R= circumfrence. that seems about right for a 14 snare. good luck and awesome stuff there. hope it works out. o and i second that the no legs on the other dragon looks cooler

you should try doing that as a wood burning. That would look sweet.

w00t w00t... thanks guys... glad you like it. I'm hoping it'll come out as the image I have in my head... so far so good.
I still have a lot of work to do to the shell first

OMG, that is stunning. I would love to have a cool custom design on my drum, too bad I'm not creative and can't draw.

You probably could if you tried real hard. It's just right-brain activity just like music and whatnot. I usually just shut off my analytical side and then everything comes together...
If you have a girlfriend... try drawing a picture while you are talking to her on the phone.
Your mind will be away from the drawing and then when look at it later, you'll be surprised at how accurately you can actually draw.

That's looking really sweet.

Take a look on Ghostnote, there is someone on there (can't remember their name) who has done similar works, with Koi instead of Dragons. He/she has done it as a pencil drawing on the drum shell, and then coloured it in (again with pencil) directly onto the shell. They then use spray on laquer so as to not ruin the artwork.

Work like this done well on a drum is absolutely incredible. I hope you pull it off :)

Dude that drawing is sweet you could kill me in quick drawing. But if it were me I'd have the two dragon tails entwined, but thats me, it still looks sweet though. I hope it comes out nicely for you.

great sketches man. I was curious to know what colors your dragons were going to be?

I'm kind of torn. I'm not sure if I should airbrush it... or actually pencil it in... cause you can pencil draw on smooth wood surfaces. I'm gonna experiment on small samples, but I've always been better at controlling a pencil and airbrushing is a totally different thought process than pencil drawing.
I'll get some samples images up tomorrow and you guys can tell me what looks better.

paint it on with a brush then go over it with a few coats of lacquer...

I'll be using tube lugs so that they don't interfere greatly

i loved drawing those dragons since i was little. typically there is a heavy focus on the 'blades' on the back (for lack of a better english word), the tail and the mane. great job!

Alright, so for now, I'm putting off the dragon idea.
The finish was really bad underneath the stain, so I coated the snare with rice-paper and I'm going to do some chinese brush paintings over it. I'll do some more prelims and post them up in a couple of hours.
