Some of you may remember my thread asking about the value of a cut down Paiste Formula 602 crash. I decided to take a chance on it, butnot before asking a few questions. After my enquiries, they offered me alower price: £20 including postage. Considering that's a £15 saving for me, and the fact they said I could send it back for a refund if I didn't like it, I thought "Hey, why the hell not?". So it arrived today, but I had to wait until I got home from school to test it.
First impressions were not good. When crashed, it pleased my ear in the same way bricks fly. Highpitched, gongy and whiny, it was a bit of a disappointment. However, I had a backup plan. Being that it was cut down to 14", it was hi hat sized. And wouldn't you know, paired with the top of my A Mastersounds, it sings sweetly as part of a duo, 602 on top, being thinner, Mastersound on the bottom.
As I don't have a digital camera, or for that matter a scanner, here are the pictures the shop sent when I asked for them:

im not too into paiste, but arnt the 602's a low end of paists line?
the thing about getting lower end cymbals is your never going to be satisfied with them..
saving up cash for the big daddys is the way to go!

602s seem to be valued as the highest 'low end' paistes, but arent in prod. anymore.

602's were Paiste's highest range for decades, and are one of only two ranges Paiste ever made using B20 bronze, the other being Sound Creation. They are now discontinued, and highly sought after on the basis they're actually excellent cymbals. They exchange hands on eBay for tidy sums of money, depending on the model and rarity.
Formula 602 series, first released in 1959 and still regarded by many as the finest cymbals yet made by a major manufacturer, of bell bronze. Many examples of the 20" medium ride still exist, at the other extreme the paperthin crashes are rare and almost priceless, other models vary between these extremes.
Many collectors regard the 602 to be the quintessential Paiste Sound. Nonetheless, due to sales figures, they were discontinued and are now considered very valuable. There is no stock left of these cymbals in either the US or Swiss warehouses. Some 602 collectors have seen them for sale on the Internet and vintage catalogs for $250-$400 a cymbal.
Low end? No, not really.

Nice, that's a cool idea, mixing hi-hats between brands.

Were the 602's the line Bonham used? Looks like them. I like the sound of his cymbals on the Led Zeppelin dvd I watched with my band today.

No I believe Bonham used Paitse 2002 and Giant Beat Series.

if you want to hear 602s in their glory, listen to mick fleetwood; he uses a 24" 602 ride which is brilliant.

Haha, 602s low end... I can see how you would make the mistake, but they go for an insane amount of cash.

I'm using it as the bottom cymbal just now. The question is what to do with the bottom Mastersound. I'll certainly keep it around. It means I can mix and match whenever I want to change it up. Besides, the Mastersounds in their oringinal state are definately better for louder playing.
