hey guys, i've been playing with this guy at school for a while now and he's being sort of restrictive in his music tastes and ideas. he thinks we should only write originals, i think we should cover at least ten songs before we start that. he has different tastes, and is a bit naive about music in general at times. i want to get a three piece together, but i don't think he'd like the idea (too 'Punk', and he hates punk). so questions:
how do i find someone to play with?
how do you make it so the band can work together well? i've seen people doing it, but me and this guy just can't get it together.
thanks in advance

It's really nice when u can come up with a band with some close friends, or people with the same tastes generally. But the way ur talking about this guy, It dosn't sound like that would work too well. U haveto be able to work together, and kinda do ur own thing to come up with a music style that works for everyone. But of course everyone hasto be a liiittle leanient. I listen to death metal and such, and play in a thrash punk band, but I love it all the same. that would be my thoughts anyway. And yes, covers are a good way to start, It definetly gets u into the groove with ur band members, playing songs u can all listen to. Then when u think ur ready u can start to play some originals. I tried to help a guy out before with his original songs, and he had never learned any cover songs... It was awful, bad timing, just wasn't in the groove, it didn't work.

Just talk to people in your school or go to the local music store (not a cd or ****ty store like HMV) and ask the people there if they know anyone thats looking to be in a band. I found my right hand man just this year. He came this year to school and its my 3rd year there but im a friendly and social guy and he had on a Zeppelin shirt so I just talked to him and we both have nearly the exact same tastes in music, we both write and we both play the 3 main instruments of rock. Just look for someone you can relate to and get alone with, cause if youre lucky the band will be going for the longrun.

If you dont get along then **** it. Whats the point of spending lots of time with this dude if you have nothing in common and dont get along. Try to find people with the same attittude and tastes as you. Each band needs a personality that has a piece of each member to make it. Try to find unique and creative people that are fun to hang around with.

probably the best thing to do is explain to the guy that either he should learn some songs and then write originals, or he can try to come out with another idea, or he can just leave and find a band better for his tastes and ideas...theres always other ppl out there, the music store thing is a good idea, and you could probably put something in your local paper or put a bulletin up at some local hangout or other
