How would it be done? That is, combine muting acoustic drums with setting up electronics so that in your headphones, you can hear what they WOULD sound like if they weren't muted....

It could be done easily enougb by simply using mesh heads and by purchasing drum triggers and a brain.
I think there is a tutorial on building just such a set online somewhere.

Please do post if you find it. Any chances of posting drum trigger/brain combo you would get, maybe off of musiciansfriend? Ideally not the MOST expensive combination...

That I would get?
Well I would use a lap top and a midi system if I was going to use electronics, then again it would be for very different reasons.
Any of the roland or alisis(spell?) brains are great. The Yamaha DTX is as awesome. I'd use DDrum triggers..

i know that, you know what i mean. that the only person who hears it is the person with the headphones.

drumshed.org is a fantastic resource with a fairly strong community of builders
edrum.for.free.fr and http://members.aol.com/btnkbndt63/ are good for the specific information youre looking for, if something isnt working out post at drumshed and someone should help you.
Im undertaking a similar project right now, and its not overly difficult.

Also, another question. Comparatively, is a yamaha DTX-II with 9 pads for $625 a good deal? I couldn't find how much that is new, but someone is selling a used one that they claim to be "without a flaw" for $625 near me.

i think they were around $1500 US when they were new. i could be off by a bit. keep in mind that the dtx-II may be in good shape but it uses older technology. like with computers, the newer kits are more advanced but don't cost more.
