View Full Version : drummer's jam

hey folks.
was wondering if anyone's ever jammed with just themselves and another drummer? (on two sets...duh)
how well does it work? does it get boring after a while (as in, can such a jam be kept interesting once a week for many months)? can two drummers of different playing ability (say, myself playing for ~14 months, and another playing for quite a few years) actually get into something exciting?
would a bassist really be needed to tie it all together?
I'm seriously wondering these things, because I'd LOVE to jam with another drummer some time. preferably someone who can sorta carry the whole direction of the thing, but still allow me to try some new things and feed off them.

Ah yeah the Drumbassadors rule! Definately worth a look if you don't already know about them.
My old drum teacher did that with me for a couple of lessons, we'd just take turns to play 4 bars of something, and I'd try and use some of his ideas. I think it would be more fun for the person feeding off the more experienced guy, but good all round I reckon.

ive only done it a couple times with my drum teacher. it was pretty fun, and im sure you could put together two different beats to make a really mind blowing one.

I've done it with two sets, congas, and a djembe; but I have never done just two sets.

yeah that's the sort of thing I'm thinking.. the more experience guy playing some crazy tom beat, and the crappy guy (that'd be me) really playing more accented "beat" to it (snare/bass/crash/splash)...since that's the stuff that seems to come so easily to me anyway when working with a bassist & guitarist.
and then, of course, feeding off each other, switching things up, and just realllly playing nice and tight together.. ahhhhhh sounds like so much fun!
so am I correct in assuming it would get kinda boring after a while, though? I mean, you can do a LOT with a drummer, bassist, and guitarist....but two drummers...I'd like to think the possibilities are endless, but in reality I imagine it would get kinda boring after some time..
EDIT: as for the drumbassadors.. pretty sure I've heard the name thrown around somewhere.. gonna check em out now! thanks!

well, that's why I'm here asking. my kit is currently here at home (where there's hardly space to set it up as a 4-piece!), but I'm considering throwing a craigslist ad up, looking for another drummer who might want to give this a shot. thing is, I'd hate to move my whole kit over to their place just to find out a couple weeks later that it's just not working like I imagined it might...

It's worth the shot man. Just groove while someone plays tom oriented beats and you just do what you do and flip it around. Also give each other lessons, y ou know, learn from each other. A bassist would be cool as well, but I herad they were lazy as ****;)
Go for it... Tell us how it goes..I might do it with 2 or 1 of my drummer friends as well.

Drum circles are INSANELY fun...
I've never done it with two whole sets, normally we just take a tom each or so and just go crazy.
Put a strobe light on for added effect, it was so fun when we did that.
Yea, it's a lot of fun, I wouldn't worry at all about keeping any kind of beat, just try to sort of flow, feel what the other person is doing, sometimes follow, sometimes lead a little...
I really just wouldn't take it too seriously...

I used to do that with my old drum teacher all the time. It was actually really quite fun. I would give it a try and see how you like it.

I was in GC once and I was playing a FAT groove and a young church playing kid came and started soloing over it and we traded fours and stuff. It was great.

gah. if it wasn't such a pain to bring my kit to a total stranger's place....I'd be on it in a second.. maybe I'll take up my friend's offer to let me keep the kit at their little studio so I can jam with their drummer once in a while. only problem with that is that they said I'd have to take it apart and put it up in the storage loft area when I'm not using it. hmmmm...

Just be cool and use a three peice. End of your problems.

Myself and a friend tend to find ourselves going to the nearest GC about once a month or so and we end up jamming. They usually only have 3 full kits set up so we take 2, and one of the workers will always sit down...it's a good time.

I've tried jamming with just another drummer a few times. They always turn into fierce battles.

I've actually starting setting my kit up as a 4-piece with a single crash and ride (which really isn't too far from my usual of 1 crash, 1 splash, 1 ride), and I've never had so much fun! if I have the balls, maybe I'll try a 3-piece. that would rock.
I'm gonna see what my friend says about keeping the kit in their studio. I'll shove the bass drum in the corner when I'm not using it, and the rest can go up in the loft.... maybe we can get a percussion jam going at some point.. :)

trade 16s or something
or one person lays down a groove while another solos, and then switch off

Drumming with another drummer on two sets is a ball.
It's like a drum circle with two people. It's very educational too. You find yourself quickly absorbing stuff from the other person.
I reccomend it strongly. If you have the oppurtunity, do it.
I used to get together once a week with another drummer, but he's more of a bassist now.

I've done this once with my teacher, It's alot of fun and very education but also pritty hard.
We basicaly did one of us doing a 8th beat the other doing a 16ths and swapping around between solo's and trading solo's.
