View Full Version : Pot crackling?
My tone pot crackles when I turn it. I took the pickguard off and cleaned the dust out from inside, but I don't know how to take the pot off the bass. I tried pulling and it doesn't want to come off.
Suggestions?

I'm 90% sure you must unsolder it. Snapping it off would not be a good idea.

There may be a little washer/nut in between the pot and the pickguard..
I *think* loosening that let's you pull out the pot.

Is there a little gap in between the knob and the pickguard?
If so, get a wrench with a thin tip and just take it off.

Spray it with a contact cleaner.

Yeah, don't remove it, don't un-solder it. Just get some pot cleaner spray and spray it in through any gap in the back, like near where the connections are. Then before it dries cycle the control back and forth to clean it. Repeat... Then you should be fine for months, at least.

i had it all cleaned but it is the pot itself thats damaged, crackles wen i pan between pu's, unfortunately it aint a standard pot, it has a printed circuit board on it an stuff.
p.s. wen i had it cleaned at my local store the guy said it had been done already b4 i bought it without me knowin and the person who had done it had used WD40 or summit rather than switch cleaner, wat a scrote, wish guitarguitar had told me that b4 i bought cos it shows they knew it wasn't perfect.

lol
ok heres what you should do to take it off
pop off the knob with something like a screw driver(flat head)
............ _________
...........|..............| <---knob
...........|..............|
________|______|__<---wedge screw driver here and make the knob go up
once you do that there's a washer/nut (which one?) you have to get rid of
just unscrew it....simple
.........|..|
....___|..|___
__|________|__<----nut/washer that you have to unscrew
once your done that it should be dis-attached to the pickguard and you can clean it or whatever you wanna do
if you want to put a new pot in, jus un-solder, and re-solder everytrhing back togher with the new pot instead of the old one
(the dots are in my pictures because the spaces got deleted for some reason when i post)
