Well I went in for an hours practice today, came out with some REALLY (well for me) great stuff, was messing around with different time signitures coming up with new grooves, applying rudiments, soloing and all of it

I was so incredibly happy, nd was looking forward to using them in our (my bands) songs. But my problem is, when ever I'm playing one of the songs I have an incredible mind blank and I just tense up, I lose all chopping ability, and argh its so incredibly disheartening, when I'm on my own I have all these great ideas/grooves/chops , but once i start playing a song...they just disapear out of the window

And its not just a case of th songs like being too fast to use them or something, its like a genuine mental issue, where i just cant remember for the life of me , what i did earlier which i thought was special

anyone else have these like mind blank moments or anything?

There is kind of a saying that is known around many musical institutions. It goes -

Everyone is a god in their practice room.

You can't really play it, unless it's in context. The rest is all fluff.

Yeah, I can totally understand that saying, but these are things which could really be applied in these songs, or just things like basic fills and what not, i just seem to freeze up, my muscles tense and my mind blanks out lol

Maybe I just need to totally looosen up when playing a song, and just...im not sure, reach enlightenment or something i dnno

I dont mind playing infront of people too much, i done it quite a few times by now, I actually kinda enjoy it. But I think maybe its just me over thinking everything while playing a song. I mean today i tensed up so much i pretty much got a cramp in my hand

I guess the fact im playing atm with a woven studio head doesnt help either, because I dont get much bounce to use to my advantage

The cramp thing maybe actually a physical thing, when my band plays we usually just jam really lightly so we get the feel and then go into it. A warm-up if you like.

Yeah, music paper is really cheap. I bought a huge pad for like £4.00, I never use it though

No. It's literally meant.

This fellow's fustration is illustrating the saying perfectly. As the saying is true.

It simply means, you really don't know the stuff as well as you think you do. It happens to everyone.

I'm sort of the other way around. I play much stronger when I jam with my band. I can think of some cool things when I play by myself but playing with other people makes it a lot easier for me.

Yeah true I guess, I just havent become familier with doing all this during songs to have it come second nature yet I suppose

rant over//

Ta for your input guys

Lol its not a case of like not rmemebring its like...remembering at the time, and infact then taking it off of sheet paper would just confuse things more

Ive come to the conclusion that i just need to ....sort it out ha

For anyone who isnt aware, this is gold^
Practicing on trumpet, I can nail high F's, but in context of a group, my range is much smaller. Very frustrating.

Being able to apply the chops and beats and grooves to music is what would define playing them. Otherwise, they just add to your solo ability.

it's like learning a new language. you can learn a phrase, but once you step into a conversation with someone in that language, chances are you're not going to be able to throw the phrase in there perfectly. the more you become comfortable with your chops and whatnot, the easier it will be to throw them into a song without losing track. practice practice practice. and not just until you can play it without making a major mistake. until you can play it without making even a minor mistake while doing your math homework. the more fluent you become with it, the more natural it will become.

Make sure you dont go out and play too heavily when you play with the band. Having to hit harder results in a lot of your technique flying out the window if you hadnt practised it all at a higher volume.

On another note, concentration is more important than just about any other factor in being a successful drummer. If, in the context of a live show, your mind wanders or cannot stay focused on a particular task - like, say remembering an upcoming part of a song, then you must go back and devote practise time to lessons in concentration. Believe it or not, not all drum practise is about improving ability - Sometimes the biggest boost to your playing is an advancement in mental confidence.

I believe high f is an entire octave above the staff (not positive on terminology)
If it is thats pretty high, I played trumpet for a year and I could only hit high C (the first C above the staff).

It is impossible to hit everything, it extends infinitely high, so you are an idiot.

Thats why I asked if he was joking. Because either he was joking, or thought i meant f top line of the staff. anyway, i know people who can pull f's out of their *** without a problem. So, bringing that back to the thread topic, I imagine that in the practice room, those people can nail a's and b's
