The Alesis can will only record it's main outs into the computer. I don't have one, but I'm pretty sure it would be compatible with Audition.

so...thats a no on the recording simultaneously and seperately? Then do you know any USB devices that can record about 8 tracks simultaneously and seperately?

I would highly doubt such a device exists, the USB can only take a very very small number of tracks in real time. Usually it works out to two in and two out, somtimes you'll find a little more, but I highly doubt you'll find USB with 8 tracks.
FireWire however, has a much larger capacity, but is more expensive. For instance, if you want 8 preamps worth of audio, you could get something like the Mackie Oynx 800R

However, selling at a penny less than a grand, it's a little cost prohibitive for some people. However, it's going to cost a pretty penny to do 8 tracks simultainously. Maybe you could look into other Alesis products, I know they do have a firewire mixer, I'm just not sure of it's capacity.

The Phonic Helix 18 would be suitible and can send 8 signals into the software into individual channels and is definately alot cheaper than a Mackie.
the only other way youll be able to do something like that is with a pci card. ive got an m-audio delta 44.. it's got 4 inputs and 4 outputs, all 1/4" connections. while it's not usb, it will provide you with lower latency and will cost tons less.

Laptop? Try PCMCIA cards, I've never used one, but it's possible they would work for you.

I use a PCMCIA card for firewire 400 with a Tascam FW-1804. It works fine. You can get a good one for less than $50.

I don't like Alesis preamps. However, I wouldn't trust the reliability of the Phonic mixer, since it's made of the same paper-stuff as Behringer gear. The Mackie Onyx series preamps also require you purchase the card seperately, so they're even more expensive than upon first inspection.
I was really intrigued by the mixer/interface devices when they first came out, but I do think there are some key flaws in all of them (eg, the Onyx series from Mackie don't let you record using the in-board EQs, which are very nice and probably increase the price of the board a good $200-300).
