Depends what style you play.

Generic Response;; Go to Guitar Center (or wherever) and just try out a million basses.
Lord knows I spent hours just noodling around in there, you might even find something used that would normally go for 600+ thats in your price range.
Good luck

my band is kinda punk but i want to explore many more sounds and styles and i've been in the nearest guitar center at my place and they just sell squiers and just like my bass(the nameless one) and i know those things suck (i know it by experience)....

Just make sure you need the bass over a decent amp because a decent bass is only as good as the amp you're running it through, that's if they can even hear you.

..::WORD::..
Bad bass + Good amp = :thumb:
Good bass + bad amp =
I don't fancy fenders all that much, but Yamaha or Peavey are in my experience fairly versatile basses, and most of 'em should be in your price range!
Happy hunting...

You could get a Fender p bass, Ibanez p/j or 2 humbuckers, an OLP and upgrade the MM pickup, ESP, Schecter, SX p/j and upgrade the electronics and pickups, many many choices. For punk though, I would either get the OLP or the Fender p bass.

I'm not sure if I'm getting the prices right being from england but i would get a MIM and upgrade the pickups and bridge. Go jazz as well more tonal variety and for amps i recommend fender rumble 100, while its not an ampeg monster stack it's pretty loud and good value for money.

90% of the basses tone quality comes from the pickups. so just keep your nameless and put some really nice pups in it.

My second bass was a fretless 5-string jazz copy. It still is. tr00f.
If you want to stand-out, get a fretless.

i disagree. i think the material plays a larger part. actually i would put pickups 3-4 on the list of things to effect tone (strings, neckwood, bodywood, tone circuit) all play large roles in tone. pickups will certianly improve ur tone but id ivenst that money in a new bass first.
id highly suggest an old peavey. u could get a t-40 and use the rest to upgrade ur amp.
fretlesses are great but idk how well theyed work for punk.

OLP's don't suck. There are morons who buy a $200 dollar bass and expect an Alembic. It's a solid beginner bass, with a little work it could be a solid intermediate level bass.

Not true. The body wood, and in particular the quality of it, plays a large part too.
As for upgrading, the only thing you can't upgrade is the feel, so if the bass feels solid, then keep it and trick it out wicked. If it feels like kak, get a new bass. And always (IMO) go for feel over tone - you can buy new pickups but a new body & neck is somewhat more of a mission.
