I am a guitarist, and the reason I am in the drum forum is:
my drummer wants to learn how to heel toe (double kick)
neither of us really knows how this works. He is quite a good drummer IMO.

So could someone please point me in the direction of some good articles/lessons on this techinque. Also videos that demonstrate this method would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks Daniel

Blast beats can be used for death metal. Studies have shown that they are also the top way of torture used in the FBI today

"probably not needed."

You don't need sticks either, but they help for most genres of music. Stop being a dumbass.

Also, there are a few topics that are on Blasts. Try to search for them - you should be able to find something.

You don't need sticks like you don't need blast beats. It's hard to be in a death metal (or similiar) band without having some sort of a blast in most of your songs. Just like it's hard to play most rock songs with brushes or your hands.

Anyway - I wasn't saying that we should play without kick pedals, or sticks. I was saying that you don't need them. There is a huge difference. With you being so smart and all, that should have been obvious. Rock drummers don't need to play in 4/4 either, but we do. Jazz drummers don't need do have swing patterns, but they use them anyway. So why must you bash on death drummers?

Granted... they have their place. However the amount of energy put into learning that single lick, compared to the wealth of other skills nessicary to play drums... is just TOTALLY out of whack.

You don't learn heel-toe to learn how to play double kick rolls. It's a means to an end, not the end to the means.

Do blast beats have their place? Yes. And most people start working on them FAR before they should. That's why they sound like utter crap 99% of the time.

All a blast beat is, is single strokes on the kick. Just like your hands.. you can't just go blasting away as fast as you can. It sounds like crap, it doesn't work. Gotta work up to that stuff.

In other words, if you want to learn to "play a blast beat", stop. That's pointless. Learn to play kick drums properly, and then those things.. single stroke rolls, flams, triplets, etc will fall into place. It's no different then the hands.

You don't get to whip out dci level solos, or any lick out of a dci level solo when you can't even go through the 40.

It's identical with the feet.. you don't get to rip out that stuff until you go through the basics.

Few here have gone through the basics, and you most deffinetly have not if you don't even play drums.

ThreadStarter - I'ma guitarist, what you are asking is like someone going "I'd like to play cliff's of dover, can somebody show me how to play that?"

It ain't going to happen, you gotta work through the basics of guitar before you can handle that stuff. Exact same situation.

We all know what happens when people try and play "cliffs of dover" when they lack the basics... it sounds like crap.

The only good people who i've heard play blast beats are the berzerker drummer, and inferno from behemoth.

" Jazz drummers don't need do have swing patterns, but they use them anyway."

Hmm... well I'd like to see you try and play jazz without swing.

Kick drums were originally kicked. It sounded good. I don't know about you, but I can play with my hands. Sure, it sounds different, but it goes to show they're not needed.

You can't play with your hands in any modern live playing situation unless the music has been specifically adapted for it.

The bold disproves styler's opinion that you do always need sticks.

Speaking of non-sticks - brushes.

The whole reason for my post was to prove that Fishbulb is a moron by saying gravties are "probably not needed." I wouldn't want to hear jazz without swing just like I wouldn't want to hear death or black metal without blasts.

I also agree that you shouldn't practice playing blasts until you have the experience and control that you need to make them sound like "music"(I know how you guys love your blast beats.) Same goes for guitar players raping Eric Johnson's only worthwhile song, or Van Halen's Eruption.
