When you do rudiment practice, how much do you raise your sticks? I've been watching some video clips on the Vic Firth web and was looking at the rebound stroke. This seems to be where the stick is brought up to approx 90 degrees angle and then strikes the drum at 180 degrees. Is this correct? Do many people play their rudiment prac like this? It is tempting to only bring the stick up a little way off the pad/snare. It's difficult to explain what I mean. Which is the 'right' way?

sticks heights is usually a matter of dynamics. it takes alot of practice to be able to keep your sticks heights the exact same and play different sound levels.

i think in a complicated way that explains it.

Practice your rudiments with the most exaturated stick heights and dynamics. From the softest tap, to 18" accents.

Also, slowly to a click.

As well, move the accents around over the various places it could go for the given rudiment.

Then take it to the kit, be creative in orchastrating it around.

make sure to get it done on the kit. the pad is nothing like playing on an actual kit.

I would suggest practicing at all stick heights

You should do both. The pad is good for fine tuning things and for working on accents, stick heights and whatnot, the kit is good for everything else.

in my experience the pad is totally different than the kit. its harder to use your wrists on the pad over its harder to use your fingers on your kit.

i try and use my kit as much as possible, only my pad when i cant use my kit.

I have a e-kit, so whenever im practicing rudiments, i stay away from my kit.

normal stick height is at about 6in. Not literally but that should give youa good estimate. Piano is normally at 3 (or sometimes lower) and accetns are done at either 9in. or 12in.
