Black Flag.

Hell yes. Easily one of the definitive hardcore punk bands of all time. Scratchy solos, edgy social commentary, and as WMP describes them, journeys into gut-pounding heavy metal.

I've been listening to them non-stop lately, and just downloaded the Damaged album, which is ****ing awesome.

Jealous cowards try to control.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
They distort what they say.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
Try and stop what we do.
Rise above,
when they can't do it themselves.

We are tired of your abuse.
Try and stop us, it's no use.

Society's arms of control.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
Think they're smart,
can't think for themselves.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
Laugh at us
behind our backs.
I find satisfaction
in what they lack.

We are tired of your abuse.
Try to stop us, it's no use.

We are born with a chance.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
I am gonna have my chance.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.

We are tired of your abuse.
Try to stop us, it's no use.

Rise above.
Rise above.
Rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
We're gonna rise above.
We're gonna rise above.

'nuff said. Discuss the awesomeness of Black Flag ITT.

Ok so which is the greatest of all Black Flag records. I know alot of people like the Nervous Breakdown EP but come on, in terms of Hardcore history.. it has to be Damaged.

Oh and might I just say, its taken me 3 years... and WOOT 100th post.

I think I have to say they are one of my favorite if not my single favorite hardcore-punk band. I love them so much. I can't believe it took me so long to like them alot though.

Damaged is a good album and all, but I think Nervous Breakdown is the pivotal hardcore-punk album. Morris was probably their best singer. Sounds awesome on vinyl too. My War is my second favorite from them. As well as The Process of Weeding Out

I think Everything Went Black is a better starter album than Damaged as it gives a better show of their talent.

Slip It In would be my favourite Black Flag album if the songs weren't so damn repetitive. Also, Rollins was the best singer.

Something cool I noticed: on the album "Songs for the Deaf" by Queens of the Stone Age (can't remember the exact song), they use the exact drum roll from the beginning of Slip It In. I'm guessing this is a sort of tribute to Black Flag. Dave Grohl was the drummer on that album too.

Nervous Breakdown was more punk and not really straight ahead hardcore yet which I think they got too on either Jealous Again or Six Pack.

originally i thought Rollins was the best vocalist then I used to think that Chavo was the best and now i think its rollins again mainly ecause of the post damaged stuff. But i still think that chavo's versian of depression is one of their best songs (maybe the best).

I got Black Flag - No deposit No return, its a twon disc bootleg thing and its amazing it has thier 1982 demos and a interview and session that they did at tokyo studio in 1984.

Im pretty tempted to get the bars tatoo aswell but im not sure yet.

Over all their probably my favourite 80's hardcore band and to some it up well my friend asked me whats better minor threat or black flag and i came up with mnor threats probably better but theres a place in my heart for black flag.

Thats about everything black flag i have to say.

Cool band, I like them alot. As for the singer debate...I'm gonna have to go with Rollins. I haven't heard any Dez singing but I can't stand Ron Reyes, and Keith Morris is alright. He sounds better in the Circle Jerks anyways.

Now Decline of Western Civilization needs to come out on DVD so I can get some early Black Flag action.

If you enjoy Ginn's guitar playing, The Process of Weeding Out is fantastic.

03-13-2006, 11:31 PM
yah, The Process of Weeding Out definately good if you love Ginn's guitar playing. personally, i think the man is a genius, and does amazing work, but there was only so much of it i could take. its a good EP, but instrumentals can only go so far without getting boring, you know?

as for other Black Flag albums, you can't deny that Damaged is amazing and classic. it is great. but alot can be said for Black Flag's early career. after all, it was at the point Rollins joined that the band peaked. Their earlier stuff found on The First Four Years are classic, great punk rock songs. everything post-Damaged is just more rock, and eventually jazz-fusion metal-rock. but My War is a great album, and i also enjoy In My Head. Can't stand Slip It In for some reason though :P

oh, and i think Chavo was the best singer

Bad musicianship is fine, and so is bad recording (well to an extent of course) but my point is, I think if I had heard Everything went black before I had heard Damaged I would have gotten half way through and would have decided its all a bit much. I think Damaged (or even the First four years) would be much better for someone to hear whilst they are getting into the band.

Keith is a good vocalist and all, but i prefer Rollins. I'm can't say i'm a big fan of Chavo.

As for Greg Ginn, he may have been an a'sshole but his guitar work and the fact he set up the best record label ever mean he's THE MAIN MAN.

Explain ?

He was very controlling of Black Flag and whatever direction he wanted the band to go, he would make them go that way. Also, he hates the fact that Henry Rollins keeps in touch with his parents.

Quick story: Henry Rollins helped build Greg's parents' house and so when he was done helping build it, his parents gave him a room in the house. So when Black Flag broke up, Greg basically told Henry to get the hell out and stay away.

Another quick story: If Henry would ever say anything while Greg was soloing, he would get really angry. For example, if Henry were to say something like "Yeah!" while Greg was doing a lead, Greg would get mad and tell him to stop talking over his solos.

And if you're wondering how I know all this, I'm reading American Hardcore. Good book.

I love flag, and i also love the way they recognised how infuriating and narrow minded the vast majority of punk fans are. They grew their hair to annoy "****ty punkers", and moved hardcore closer to metal. Equally when Henry Rollins did a gap ad in the recent past his rationale for it was, that he did it to annoy that same kind of person. Classic.

Black Flag are better than any other 80's hardcore band.

To continue this page's trend of Black Flag dick-sucking, "I Love You" is the greatest song ever.

Except for Gorilla Biscuits. They were definitely better.

The entire album Start Today.

GB is good, but I love Black Flag more, also Minor Threat > GB but only slightly.

I seem to remember you not liking GB Nick, and Minor Threat too for that matter.

Lots of second chances. I love Minor Threat now. And I got over the thing I hated about GB, especially in Start Today since Civ's voice doesn't crack as much as it does in their s/t

I love that song also. it sounds like a Raymond Pettibon drawing in music/lyrical form.

Raymond Pettibon is Greg Ginn's brother, hes an artist and did all of BF's album covers (cept Damaged) and their flyers. Hes a pretty succesful artist today also.

I'm in a Black Flag mood today. I'm gonna put on the First Four Years and slam dance in my living room.

I like the Nervous Breakdown cover a lot, the layout kind of remeinds me of the Minutemen's Paranoid Time cover.
