Being from Denmark I pretty much only listen to danish and english music (the language). I thought it would be interesting to hear some in other languages, and since I study french I was wondering. Which french (Language. Not french people who sing in english) artists are worth checking out? Jacques Brel comes to mind, but I don't really know a lot of other artists.

Serge Gainsbourg is all that's coming to mind at the moment. That and the fact that a guy kept talking to me about Edith Piaf in a lecture earlier today. MC Solaar is supposedly good too, but I don't know.
Einsturzende Neubauten have French in their music occasionally; specifically seek out the French version of "Blume".
Other than that though, it seems that any French artists I know are ones I've just heard, or intend to check out, so I can never think of them at times like this.
Do you like hip hop? If so, check out MC Solaar and Disiz La Peste.

There is a fair bit of extreme metal from France - notably Blut Aus Nord and the whole LLN collective - but I have no idea how much French their lyrics use.

French Impressionist composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel don't fit your request. But I love them. Bah.

Amanda Woodward - emo/"screamo"
8Control - hardcore-punk
8 6 Crew - Ska (can't remember if they sing in french or not)
There is a french pop singer I can't remember her name though.

Stereolab are from France and they sing in English and French. Percolator is the only song I can think of right now which is in French.

Keren Ann was who I was thinking of.
I have a French Ska compilation as well, I think most of those artists sing in French.

I always find French music to have really weird phrasing when they sing. It's as if they have to start on irregular spots or rush a flury of words in order to fit anything in correctly to the beat.
