Hi. I've got a new kit on order (Traps) for a spare practice kit in my home which takes up minimal space. I used to have an electronic kit at home but didn't like it much so sold it. The Traps isn't everyones cup of tea but it will serve it's purpose.
Anyway.... back on to the topic.... it will come with shite stock cymbals. I only want it for home but am not sure I could cope with bin lids
What would be a good line to go for to upgrade a little? I need hats, ride and crash for cheap but reasonable quality.
(These are for practice only.... I already have decent cymbals on my 'proper' kit)
Many thanks :chug:

Probably some beginner cymbals, I would spend a load of cash on some that you use in the house. Maybe some PST5s or B8s both are good beginner cymbals, I think theyre youre best bet.

yeha.. pro sonix would be nice.. I also have to say for a practice kit zxt titaniums would be good too.. although i guess they are a bit mor expensive.

and not as good as anything else. I'd rather have solar than ZXT titaniums.

Maybe if you're really on a budget, B8s would be able to do the job, or maybe wuhans.

OK, thanks. What's the dif between Sabian Pro, and Sabian Pro Sonix? Are the Pro Sonix better?
I was also thinking about getting some smaller sized cymbals... like maybe 13" hats (? opinions?) and a 14/15" crash (??). Can you get a smaller ride or is it usually a 20"?

The paiste's are a good choice :thumb:
You have to change the cymbals as soon as you get it!
I hope your happy with your traps kit!

Anyone heard the Wuhan S series 13" hats? They're £62 from dmdrums.co.uk
May change the hats first then change the other bits as I go.

I think I've decided to go for the 13" wuhan s series hats from dmdrums. I'm thinking of just geting a mixture of stuff. On my 'proper' kit I have mainly Sabian AA (as I got a pack and stumbled upon a couple of others on ebay going for a good price). I also have a great 12" wuhan trad splash which sounds great!
Anyway, I'd like to branch out a little and move away from sabian a bit so I can just try stuff out. I'm not able to try stuff out as I live on the Isle of Man, we have one music shop which only holds approx 10 - 20 cymbals which you are NOT ALLOWED to try:angry: Miserable sod says that it you try them they become second hand:rolleyes: I dont know how he expects to sell anything!
So, I cant try so I'm trusting you :amaze:
If I buy something and hate it, I figure I can just sell it on (the joys of ebay!)
Now, the ride and crash. My fave cymbal (which I have) is a Sabian AA 13" extra thin crash - That kinda gives you an idea of the sort of sound I like. What would you suggest, maybe a 14/15" mid weight? That'd maybe be somewhere between a standard rock 16" and the one I like (which is almost a splash really).
The ride... I have a Sabian AA 20" rock ride... this is fairly heavy and I quite like the sound. As I'm thinking of going for smaller cymbal sizes, what would go well? I've seen 18" crash/ride cymbals. Are they more crash than ride usually? Would a cymbal of this size be heavy enough?
Sorry about all of the questions.... all of the replies I've had back have been really helpful so thanks to you all. As I said, unfortunatly I cant try before I buy so I really appreciate your opinions. :thumb:

I'd go Wuhan all around man. You should be able to get a decent deal on them. Maybe a S crash and a Trad ride?

You don't necessarily need to buy the same kind of cymbals all around. I would personally browse eBay for inexpensive cymbals... Wuhan's also sound like a good idea :thumb: A low budget doesn't have to mean beginner cymbals.
Also, when it comes to sizes, it's pretty much to suite your type of music. If they do, then why not get 13" hats? Nice set aswell ;)

Yeah, I know, not to worry. I'm keeping my AAs but am looking for some okish cymbals for a 2nd (practice) kit and I dont want to spend too much. I'm getting a kit which will have stock cymbals which are, as many know, are nothing more than a circular sheet of metal with no link to a musical instrument what so ever!!
Any suggestions? Gotta be better than stock, reasonable sound but wont break the bank.

Hmmm, I was thinking of maybe the S series 18" ride..... just found it on a site I've never come across before - Ted Turner Music. Going for £70. Hmmmm....

Ohhhh I see, I would say the AAX series, just get like the hats and one crash. The hats you can get used for about 100, and the crash about 70. Then get a stagg splash and itll be a little grove kit.

Thanks DM. I think I'll keep a very close eye on ebay bargains. I'm very tempted by the 13" hats. I reckon I'll go for them. Not sure if I'll get the 18' s series ride.... I'll have to have a think. Maybe ebay for the crash.
Are there any guides (sort of) which would help to get cymbals which fit together nicely (sound wise). People say you should try them to see if they mix well with the rest of your cymbal set... I cant do this so have to guess.
If something is really horribe, it wont be the end of the world though

As long as the cymbals you get are moderately versitile you should be fine. I don't think you'll turn out with a horrible mix of cymbals... Also, even with the used, you can use the cymbal companies' sound checks to get an idea of the cymbal's sounds. Reading descriptions can help as well.
Are you just having a three cymbal set-up (hats, crash and ride)?

Meinl MCS is $149 or something cheap for 14" hats 16" crash 20" ride, pretty standard sizes and Meinl makes good cymbals so that's my vote :thumb:
