using scales

i can read basic music and all but i dont know how you would use a scale to figure out notes on a song. by the way i play guitar

well you have to have a really good ear to go about it like that.
But on the other hand, as long as you are just listening to rock/pop/or any other music that isn't jazz, then it's either gonna be major or minor and that difference is easy enough to tell.

That's a pretty vague question... It sounds as if you want to write music without actually making any compositional decisions..
