Ok, I really have no idea how to phrase this, so bear with me please
Let's say I'm working with the C Major scale
When I am building chords for this (or any) scale, are there spefic chords that go in specific places? Or could I make the first chord of the scale major, the second suspended, the third a seventh chord, etc etc?

There are chords which go with each scale/mode.
In Cmajor, it would be a Cmaj7.
(C) D (E) F (G) A (B)
That's a Cmaj7 chord, C is the root, E is the major 3rd, G is the 5th and B is the major 7th.
You just build around the intervals of the scale. Like if you wanted to make that Cmaj7 a Cmaj7/sus4, you would just replace the 3rd with the 4th of the scale. So the notes of the chord would then be like this, C F G B, instead of C E G B.
The chords in the major scale go like this:
Major7
Minor7
Minor7
Major7
Dominant7
Minor7
Half Diminished 7
If you wanted to do it with a different scale, you can just do it the way I showed you above. Lay out the notes of the scale/mode and then take the root, third, fifth and seventh.
Try it with mixolydian, the notes would be G A B C D E F.
(G) A (B) C (D) E (F)
That would be the G7 chord.
Like, the intervals of the mixolydian mode are 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7. So you could look at it like that.
(1) 2 (3) 4 (5) 6 (b7)
They're the intervals of the dom7 chord.
