Need your suggestion, guys. I am going to studio next month probably, with my own drumset (old Starclassic, made out of mahogany). Currently I have Evans reso head on bottom, which I would like to keep on, and old Genera G2 coated on top, which I have to change. I like their sound, but... I think, for the recording maybe it's better to put on thinner heads, to maximize the amount of sound and attack? any suggestion is welcome.
our music is pretty intense, so I want the sound of drums to cut through that. The question is about tom-toms only - I have 10", 13" and 16" drums.

what about G1 maybe?

I like the coated g1's just as much as the clear g2's, but I dont like the clear g1's as much as the clear g2's, and I dont like the coated g2's more than the coated g1's.

Damn that was a mouthfull.

clear G1 is also awesome, but they dont have the extra stick definition that the clear G2 has.

ok this is like one of those IQ test questions.

Loyton's choice:
clear g2 or coated g1 > clear g1 or coated g2

that right?

seems so :)

I use G2 clear on the toms, clearly the best tom sounds I've achieved with my drums. Starclassic shells are very resonant, you shouldn't have to worry about your drums not sounding full enough. And since you're recording in a studio, it also depends on the mixer/producer if the toms will cut thru.

I tried G1 clear on my toms for a while, I can say that on my Exports, the toms lacked that low-end and attack. After putting the G2 clears back on, haven't thought of going back to 1-ply. The G1's also dented much faster.

of course it depends on mixer and producer, but I just want to make everything that depends on me. :) ok, everybody is for clear g2, so it must be really a choice

-make sure you have time to "break in" your heads
--especially evans, i've had a few that fall out of tune rather fast

-make 'em sound nice BEFORE even going to the studio
--you can't polish a turd

-if you're close-micing your toms, you'll want "dead"er heads, such as G2 or pinstripe (any more dead then 'stripes is overkill)
--otherwise you'll end up with, well, a lot of noise

-if you're only doing like a bass, snare, OH micing, you'll want resonant heads (g1 etc.)

yep, I'll sure put them on 2 weeks before the studio and tune twice :)

no, there will be separate mic for each tom as well

Im quite looking foward to whatever you will be recording, last video I remember you are defintaly one of the more skilled drummers on the forum.

Acutually you probably are the best at some things.

Loyton, I do all that is about internet, design and digital video. :)

one more questions - what about these heads?

EC2 Clear

Evans new 2-ply tom head, the EC2, features an Edge Control ring that isolates and dampens higher overtones, enhances low-end and attack, and enables broader tuning and dynamic ranges. Unlike conventionally damped heads, the EC2 will not choke at higher tuning ranges, or loose its full-bodied presence when tuned low.

although judging by the graph on evans site, it's not what I need now. just want to know your opinion for the future

People will say they suck just like pinstripes, but my friend got them and tried them on his Premier kit and they sounded GREAT! I say it's a good head.

Try Clear or Coated Ambs, and tune them pretty low, I've gotten good results that way in close mic recording.

Evgeny, just had to come back to tell you that's a mighty handsome webpage you've made for your band! Downloaded the video from there, and have to admit, the band looks and sounds very professional! Very solid drumming too. Keep it up!

(don't have any experience on the EC2)

Clear G2 is the way to go man. It will have that extra stick definition like thugs said.

oh, thanks Joonas, I'll keep you informed about our gigs in Finland (probably we'll play at Riihimaki even) :) would be great to see you

Yeah, if you have a gig at Riihimäki, just throw me a mail at raatis (a) muusikko.net! I'll try to bring a couple of friends too :D

Also Helsinki will do very fine, I probably have a job in there for the summer.

if you have something in mind, i would just use that.

i reckon a two ply would be better for recording. nobody likes too much ring when recording.

From what ive heard the EC2 sound very good, but if you want more attack projection and volume, then they may not fit the sound your looking for.

Evgeny

yeah, going to buy clear G2 next week. :agree:
