Letters A-G are notes. I suppose you know that.

The W's and H's stand for Whole Tone and Half Tone. Let's take C Ionian as an example. The first two notes are C and D, which are a Whole tone apart. Then comes E, which is a whole tone above D. F is a half tone above E. Understand? A whole tone is two frets; a half tone is one fret.

When soloing, these tell you which notes to use in the scale you choose. When writing songs/chord progressions, they tell you which chords you're "allowed" to use: typically, you're supposed to use only the notes within the scale. For example, in C Ionian, you're not allowed to use an E major chord, because there's a G# in E major, but there's no G# in C Ionian.

But fcuk rules, man. Play what sounds good. These things are mere guidelines. :thumb:

If you wanted to use Ionian in your solos, say C Ionian, you would just play the notes in that key (CDEFGAB) and then back it up with the chord, chord progression or arpeggio of that mode. Each mode has a chord which fits the intervals of the mode.

To find the I chord for each mode you just look at the notes in the mode and pick out the root, third and fifth note.

For example:

(C) D (E) F (G) A B

Just solo over that chord or base your solo around that arpeggio.
