I recently got into punk. [Like really into it..] I was already a decent songwriter, but that was only for hardcore stuff.. which I quickly grew out of.

Anyway.. I have been trying to write some punk songs, but everytime I show them to people they always say they're "cliche" blah blah..

Because punk is all about emotion.. I don't get how anything could be "cliche" unless it was blatanly stolen.. and also punk usually has really good rhyming flow.. that's how i try to write. Most punk rhymes ARE "cliche/overused", but we can't use them? wtf

maybe it's just the topics im writing about..

i wrote one about society. and peopel are hypocrites. like how people will claim to go to church, then drown their babies etc.. really serious song which was straight from the heart.

the other one was about over population.. and how the youth today is growing up just to fall into coroprate greed, and violence.. because that is the only way you can survive in todays "socieity"

etc..

i write a lot about society. because it really pisses me off.

what am i doing so wrong, that puts my songs in the "cliche" category?

how can I avoid this?

A couple examples would be nice. As a general rule, if you can't write with a little intelligence and wit, then your lyrics probably won't be that great.

Personally, the whole idea of "punk lyrics" seems rather stupid. Silly categorisations like that are the reason there's a bunch of cliched and formulaic stuff out there, because you get kids that think, "Well, I'll opine about the nature of society, and mention hypocrisy and it'll be punk." Yeah, whatever. Pink Floyd's Animals was politically and socially charged, and they weren't a "punk band".

There's a tips & tricks thread for writers stickied at the top. Post future questions there.

Keep it simple, keep it abrasive and keep it witty.

Listen to the likes of Dead Kennedys, Against Me!, Dead Milkmen, The Clash and Mischief Brew.

Listen, doesn't matter what they think. If it's "clique" or howver you spell it who cares? By now anything you write somebody else is gonna write it frist. Not the same thing just the topic. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Only listen to creative critism. Like if you post it on here and some one says, that's horrible, you need to find a better job. Don't listen. On the other hand, if someone says, "that's horrible, but what you could do...etc." I guess it counts. So just write what you write. I write about stuff not everybody thikns I would and they think that I steal from other peopl, you can't help it

You don't need help writing, you're just a lazy asshole. Oh, and don't listen to slip_knot576 because he's clearly drunk.
