Does anyone know any neato little tricks that make oyu sound really cool on the drums but are actually really easy? Like something that sounds cool, and makes people go WOW but really it's easy to do. I'm a beginner by the way.

If a shortcut is what you want, stop drumming now.

I used to talk like that in the first year of playing guitar, you should soon grow out of it...if not take his ^^ advice

I sometimes like to strike the drums with the tip of a drumstick. Often times, I do this in certain patterns which creates something cool. It's an easy little trick.

If you don't want to learn, you will not get anywhere.

Accents!!! Add them into snare rolls, tom rolls when playing the hi hats. Accents are great! Make it all sound much much more interesting.

I don't think the kid said "I don't want to practice at all and I want to get by on tricks".

I could be wrong, but I don't think he did.

Yeah, remember accents, you'd be surprised.

Ghostnotes. Look them up; I don't want to explain.

If you flam a snare hit with a high tom and follow it with a bassdrum accent it sounds pretty tight.

Triplets, accents, ghostnotes...

They are all parts of regular playing. They aren't tricks.

Here's a cool little beat. I've really just been trying to find a place to post this beat!

Trucker's Atlas by Modest Mouse

/-----------x3------------\
RB|o---------------|o---------------| KEY
-C|----------------|------------o---| RB = Ride Bell
HH|-------oxox-----|-------ox-------| C = Crash
-t|-o-------------o|-o-------o------| HH= High Hat o=open x=close
-S|----oo------oo--|----oo------o---| t = High tom
FT|--o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|--o-o-o-o-o-----| S = Snare
-B|o--o--oo-o-o--o-|o--o--o---oo----| FT= Floor tom
--|1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a|1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a| B = Bass

It's a really nice tom groove. I really hope someone notices this and gives it a go.

Not a trick, just a cool beat.

we ended up calling it a song. has anyone ever heard of something like this?

i learned this super special thing where i mastered the craft of special tricks

me and travis barker. travis taught me. omfg hes so good. he hit the drum with a bunch of single strokes, used no accents, and crash rode. thats how you sound good. by acting like travis barker, have almost no groove in ur playing, and never use double strokes. also poke holes through ur drums.

seriously this works though:

rkl lkr tkl mtkr ftkk

key:r-right
l-left
k-kick
t-tom
mt-mid tom
ft-floor tom
all in triplets

Well it's not a bad thing. I know Milkmit is really into Modest Mouse, and he loves the intro to Trucker's Atlas especially.

hah wtf man, seriously! :) first he steals my favorite movie in his avatar, and now he's posting the 'trucker's atlas' beat that I've pimped here at least half a dozen times in various threads. :)

I play mine a bit different. I know it's not perfect (for one, I'm missing the ride bell on the first beat), but it definitely captures the essence of that beat....and oh, is it fun to play! (and it seems to impress anyone you play it for)

...1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
HH|-------X-X------
T1|--------------oo
T2|oo----o-o-------
FT|--o-------------
SD|----f-------f---
BD|o--o-o-----o----
...RLR.L.RLRL..L.RL

it's basically a straight-forward RLRL pattern, with a couple breaks (and rL flams), as you see, and half-open hats thrown in a kinda awkward place. but with a little bit of practice, it's pretty easy to get down and sounds quite awesome.

I'm glad someone else here likes Modest Mouse a bunch!
Thank you my good sir, for this information.

We have much in common. That's a cool varation of Trucker's atlas, except I don't mean to be a big hissy pants, but Jeremiah plays on a 4 piece I believe. Cool beat, though. By any chance would you have House of Tea in which Jeremiah does a drum solo?

ah, so he DOES play on a 4-piece, huh? only time I've seen them live, they were too far back to see the kit clearly (there were two drummers more recently). but I thought I heard only a 4-piece in a lot of the songs from them....

and this is gonna sound silly from someone who's a rather obsessive fan, and owns each of their CDs from 'long drive...' right up to 'good news...', but I've never heard house of tea. what is it from?? I found the tab for it a while ago, but I have no clue how accurate it is: http://www.mxtabs.net/tabs.php?path=Drums,m,18811,Modest+Mouse,House+Of+ Tea,184875

House of Tea is supposed to be a pretty rare .mp3 of Jeremiah doing a solo live. It's one of those songs when Isaac Eric and Jeremiah just completely make up a song on the spot, and it ended up with Jeremiah doing a drum solo. Have you ever heard some of their improvised songs like Jawbreaker, Calculus Man, Isaac's Dream, or White Lies, Yellow Teeth? If not, I would gladly upload them for you.

I'll be uploading the rest on yousendit because rapidshare has some weird one download per hour rule. It would be a ton easier if you have an AIM sn? If so PM me it and I'll send you the rest.

a neat little "trick" is doing paradiddles on the snair and doing paradiddles on the drums but doing it opposite...like LRLL on the snare and RLRR on bass and be insync with each other
