Would someone care to post some linear beats that sound good, as I was doing one for a zeppelin beat and its something I think sounds great and is a good exercise.

The easiest way to come up with linear beats is to take the kick and snare parts of beats and fill the rests inbetween them with hi-hat.

Ok if the tab turned out right, it should be the beat for Drop It Like It's Hot by Snoop Dogg. It sounds best if you do cross sticks on the snare, and hit the rims of the toms, alternating between them (the toms).

while this isn't 100% a linear beat....it part of it is, and it's funnnn to play!

first bar is the straight beat, second bar is the small fill-type thing for it.
right hands on hats, left on snare, with right hand coming off only during the fill thing. half-open hats on the 3& of the fill, right on the bass beat. the half-open hats works well for the same during the main beat.
and no, this isn't an original. it's from an american analog set song, 'these days'. original is played around 104bpm, which it seems to sound best at (naturally).

This comes from Muse's Time is running out. The HH note is sloshy and closes once the next measure comes in. I don't know if it's accurate, but it's what I hear. Repeats 4 or 8 times. It fits pretty well into that song.

Linear grooves are actually very simple. The easiest way to play a constant variating groove is just to sing syncopations in your head when you play. Start off with only one note value, then combine 8ths and 16ths, and following that quarters, to add the desired 'funky' feel.
Remember to practice orchestrating many different paradiddle stickings around the kit, with a syncopated bass drum too.
