Well i was wondering i have a 4 piece drum set (not including bass drum) and I'm looking into mics. I already have a 6 channel mixer. Do i have to mic up each tom necessarily or do I just mic up the snare, bass and have two over head mics?

I would mic up every tom, the snare, hats, bass, 2 overheads and thats it.

would be fine if i did my idea because then i can get four high quality mics as opposed to 6 bad mics

I would Mic every drum individually. It sounds much better in recordings

if your hell bent on your idea why did you even ask us

it would be best to do each tom
snare, and overheads

just save up money for a bigger mic set

The mic setup I use (when I can borrow mics) is as follows:

Bass Drum (in the port)
Snare/Hi-Hat condenser
Omni-Tom (made up word) a few feet in front of the whole kit pointed at toms
Overhead condenser to pick up other cymbals

It may be unorthodox but it works great for me.

for a 4pc.

if you have a bigger kit, you might want to mic them toms to keep their volumes uniform.
